Sensational revenge

It is tempting to call it revenge when Christophe Capelle from the minor Big Mat Auber 93 team took the French jersey in Poiré-sur-Vie. Big Mat is one of the teams that have protested for not being invited to the Tour de France where the team has coloured several stages with their early attacks.

The 243 km race was decided in a mass sprint where Jacky Durand (Lotto) and Anthony Morin (Crédit Agricole) completed the podium. The major break of the day came from Christophe Moreau (Festina) and Pascal Chanteur (Ag2R) who got a gap with 40 kms to go but they were caught on the fast parcours (average 47 kph) with 14 kms to go.

The Picard Capelle, 33 years in August, has as his top merit an Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit from the track at Atlanta but has a more or less unwritten record on the road where he hovers around 500 on the UCI list.

"I didn't feel too well this morning. I rode the track World Cup in Mexico last weekend and have suffered from jet lag the last few days", said the happy Capelle who was helped to the front on the final kilometre by his team mate Guillaume Auger. Jacky Durand caught his wheel on the way up but was not able to pass him.

"I had super legs but Christophe is just too fast for me in a sprint," said Durand, who captured the Tricolore in 1993 and 1994.

Capelle made his come back after a year of sickness in May. He has suffered a strange parasite infection. His comment about the coming Tour de France without the French Champion: "I have told Jean Marie Leblanc (the Tour director) what I think about the matter but there isn't anything to do about it. C'est la vie."
