The first stage of 105 kms was a long loop in the flatlands surrounding
coastal Cartagena, Colombia. 24 yr old Latvian rider Andris Nauduzs,
riding for Selle Italia-Aguardiente Nectar, won in a sprint finish,
edging out Colombian sprinters Marlon Perez and Miguel Sanabria. There
was a massive spill on the last kilometer in which the Ecuadorian hopeful
William Portilla suffered a lesion to his forehead.
Tomorrow's stage is between Cartagena and Barranquilla, 141 kms, along
the beautiful Caribbean coast. The Vuelta a Colombia will cover 2,332
kms in 16 stages finishing in Bogota June 26.
