Lombardi wins stage one in a sprint

The 2000 edition of the Österriech Rundfahrt kicked off with a flattish stage starting and finishing in Gröbming. Telekom's Giovanni Lombardi was ultimately successful in the sprint, beating Austrian National rider Gerrit Glomser and Rene Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner).

His team had to do some work to catch Hans-Peter Obwaller (Austrian Nat. Team), who broke away at kilometre 12 to win all the sprints and all the mountain prizes. He was caught after 130 kilometres out on his own, with just 8 kilometres to go. Other incidents saw last year's winner, Maurizio Vandelli (Sabil Steiermark) fall before the first mountain prize, but he was able to resume straightaway. Luca Scinto (winner of the UNIQA classic this year) was not so lucky, and had to retire from the race.
