Zanetti triumphant in the Appennines

Italian cyclist Mauro Zanetti (Vini Caldirola) won a very wet 61st edition of the Italian classic, Giro dell' Appennino today. The 206 kilometre race finished in Pontedecimo, near Geneva and only a sodden group of 19 eventually rode into the finish. 27 year old Zanetti jumped in the final few hundred metres to beat Eddy Mazzoleni, his breakaway companion. Mapei's Paolo Lanfranchi finished further back in third, solo.

133 started but 19 finished - that was the legacy of the conditions that the race was held under. Mazzoleni and Zanetti made their decisive attack on the climb of the Bocchetta, taking Lanfranchi and his teammate Andrea Noé with him. On the descent, the latter two were dropped as Mazzoleni and Zanetti pushed it to the limit.

This was 27 year old Zanetti's fourth professional victory, and his second in the rain after he won the Coppa Placci in 1998.
