Giro del Trentino Adige - NEItaly, June 16-18, 2000The Stages
PreviewThe weekend of June 16-18 will see another women's stage race held in Trentino Alto Adige, Italy. This time, it is not a UCI category race, however several international teams (including the Australian women) will be taking part. 100 riders are expected to sign on on Friday, with an evening 4 kilometre prologue. Stage 2 will start and finish in Foresta, a 115 kilometre ride through the hills surrounding Meran and Bolzano, with the finish at the famous Italian Brewery Forst at the end of a short but difficult climb. The last stage on Sunday is 100 km long and is out and back from Bolzano to Bolzano. The cyclists will ride from Bolzano (200 m) to Sciaves (about 800 m) and then back to the town. Stage 1 - June 16: Bolzano, 2.5 km ITTWith all Italian teams well represented, current World Road Champion, Edita Pucinskaite, and former world champions Alessandra Cappellotto and Catherine Marsel participating, thispposedall 3 day tour certainly has arong field to test each other before theart of next week's Giro d'Italia Femminile. The prologue started at 8pm, and provided a great spectacle, on the 'hot-dog' course near the Olympic stadium in Bolzano. the stage was won by Lithuania's Edita Pucinskaite, who beat Gabriella Pregnolato (Gas Sport) by 3.14 seconds and the Ukraine's Gitana Groudite by 3.16. Kristy Scrymgeour was once again the best of the Australians finishing 4th, with Hayley Rutherford the best of the younger riders. Alison Wright (Aus) AIS Australia 32.18 Stage 2 - June 17: Foresta-Foresta, 112 kmA relatively flat stage today. 1 small mountain sprint, and a solid 400 metre uphill finish in Foresta. Russian Alfa Lum rider, Svetlana Boubnenkova was the clear winner from Greta Zocca, with Edita Pucinskaite retaining the overall lead after placing 3rd. After Alison Wright's unfortunate crash in the prologue last night, a focus for her towards the Blue jersey, taking both intermediate sprints during the stage and a clear lead in this classification. Kym Shirley and Hayley Rutherford positioned well for the finish and just outside the first 10, with Hayley moving into 2nd on the young riders classification. Sara Carrigan and Kristy Scrymgeour rode well in support of Alison during the intermediate sprints. Again, a relatively flat stage to finish the tour tomorrow, with a tight 4 km finishing circuit. Sara Felloni (Ita) Alfa Lum 3 Stage 3 - June 18: Bolzano-Bolzano, 100 kmAfter the start Alessandra D'Ettore attacked the bunch and rode alone for 15 km. Then, when started the climb to Sciaves Gas Team's girls tried to make the race. Luperini and the 2nd Cappellotto forced on the ascent but Pucinskaite was there. In a short time the front bunch was joined by the Edilsavino's Boubnenkova and Polkhanova plus the "old" Lucia Pizzolotto (she's 40). They started the descent part of the stage with over 1 minute to the bunch. At the arrival Boubnenkova replayed her sprint of yesterday in Foresta and easily won, preceding Luperini and Cappellotto. World's Champion Pucinskaite won the overall Giro and gave some good advice for the forthcoming Giro Femminile starting in Trentino next Sunday. Results1.
