Stage 1 - July 25: Blue
Cosmos Design ITT, 11 km M/W
Brief report - men
Today was the first stage of the Wendy's Classic, which this year is
being held under a stage race format. The first stage was a time trial,
won by Shaklee's Eric Wohlberg from Mercury's Gord Fraser.
The race concludes Sunday with the world famous Wendy's Criterium
that should decide the overall.
Andrea Ratkovic's report
Today was a calm and muggy day here in Columbus, OH. The time trial
was 7 miles through a twisty bike path and along a busy street (but
our section was "closed"), and through some parking lots. The key to
doing well in this time trial was riding the course FIRST. Only 2 of
the AutoTrader.com gals did that (Pam and Tina). It was a very kewl
course actually with some rises and some really technical parts (bumpy,
bumpy section). I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I didn't win (darn
it!). More power to little Anne Samplonius and bigger (but not by much)
Annie Gariepy; they totally rocked the house, 1st and 2nd respectively.
AutoTrader.com did well with 9th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 25th, and 30th
out of 52 talented women. Most of us are treating Wendy's as part of
a 3-week stage race as we just came from the Cascade Classic in Bend,
OR. Then we are going to Tour de Toona in Altoona, PA. right after our
gig here in Columbus. So, hey, we were so excited to find a Krispy Kreme.
I'd been waiting a long time to try one. I did, and it didn't taste
any differently than a Dunkin Donuts. Tina argues with me saying I'm
crazy. Maybe I got a bad batch. I'll keep trying until I find the ultimate
doughnut.
Columbus is a neat town. Today we did a 2-hour cool down amongst the
cornfields and tractors. I was scaring my teammates with my "Children
Of The Corn" stories. Then we found this beautiful river with a huge
tree stretched out across it. We saw that it had a ladder of wood built
on to it and ropes with rings on the ends so that one could perhaps
climb the tree and swing out like tarzan and let go over the water.
We all admired it from afar... ;) So yeah, and tomorrow we are going
to do a nice ride with Timex and Saturn. Power in numbers we believe
against the "Children Of The Corn."
Til next time------keep it real folks.
