International Thüringen Rundfahrt for Women - 2.9.1Germany, July 25-30, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 6 - July 30: Gera - Zeulenroda, 122.2 kmTight finish sees Karpenko hang onThe final day of the Thüringen Rundfarht was again overcast, and many weary legs headed off on the final stage of what has been another exciting race. It was expected that Hanka Kupfernagel would try at some point in the stage to get away for a possible overall victory. She of course was loyal to her tireless teammates who had worked so hard to keep the team in contention, and the overall leader Karpenko who rode superbly 2 days ago to claim the lead. Cobbled uphill stretches through villages, and wet windy conditions made for a hard final day. 3 mountain sprints, and 2 intermediate sprints worth time bonuses, and some nasty 14-16% hills in the final 30 km, produced a great finale to the tour. Kupfernagel attacked with 20km remaining on the 16% incline to the last mountain sprint of the tour. This was going to have a big impact overall on the Aussies and Norwegians, and it came down to a group of 27 riders left, with Aussies Anna Wilson and Juanita Feldhahn, and Norwegians, Ingunn Bollerud and Solrun Flatas, to try and close the gap. Kupfernagel needed 1:23 to take 2nd place from Feldhahn, and overtake the Norwegians at the same time. She had already gained 3 seconds in a sprint time bonus, plus the stage win would be worth another 10 seconds. The gap grew to 1 minute at 4 kilometres remaining, but the determined chase closed it to 39 seconds by the finish, retaining 2nd and 3rd overall for the Aussies and Norwegians. Kupfernagel leap-frogged one Norwegian to finish 4th overall. Another fantastic display of strength by Kupfernagel, and indications of an exciting Olympic Road Race in 2 months.
