Bartoli's test OK

Italian Champion Michele Bartoli won the dress rehearsal for the World Championships. The GP Ouest France was held on this year's World Championships circuit in Plouay, Bretagne and the Italian won the race in his first attempt at this prestigious race.

The first major break came on the fourth of fifteen laps when 18 riders, among them Andrea Tafi (Mapei), Sven Montgomery (FDJ), Magnus Bäckstedt (CA) and Will Frischkorn (Mercury), got away. However, they never gained more than three minutes to the peloton despite the fact that most teams were represented. Mapei and Lotto decided to reel them in.

A six man break with four classics specialists: Bartoli, Mario Aerts (Lotto), Nico Mattan (Cofidis), Tristan Hoffman (Memorycard), first year pro Walter Bénéteau (Bonjour) and David Moncoutie (Cofidis) escaped with 40 km to go. Moncoutie was dropped and the race was decided on the final climb of the Côte de Ty Marrec, less than five kilometres from the finish. Bartoli gapped them and won by ten seconds to Mattan, Bénéteau and Hoffman with Aerts a couple of seconds behind them.

The victory will of course put Bartoli among the major favourites for the World's in ten weeks but after the race he did his best to keep a low profile: "I'm not fully recovered from my stomach illness during the Tour and I even vomited with thirty kilometres to go. Today I also had a team working exclusively for me."

The question is how many team mates from Mapei he will have along in October. Two fairly good guesses are Andrea Tafi, who did a tremendous job for Bartoli today, and Bartoli's personal lieutenant Paolo Bettini. It will also depend on how things shake out in the Olympics.

Belgian Nico Mattan showed that he has kept his good form from the Tour but for his part the World's will probably be a race as domestique for team mate Frank Vandenbroucke. The third podium rider, Walter Bénéteau has his plans for October clear: Vacation. The debutant from the little Bonjour team has low hopes to reach the World's.
