Despite the consistent pace it wasn't long before the attacks started. Forty kilometres in to the 135 km road race Zeth Romanis and Ben O'Leary made the first attack up the 3 km climb, the main group making no effort to chase the escapees. With frequent attacks the peleton was unable to organize a concerted effort to chase the two escapees. Both Zeth and Ben worked well together gaining over 3 1/2 minutes lead on the main bunch. With 30 kms remaining, including a 3 km climb, the pair looked to have the race won. Then came a flurry of attacks up the final climb and a chasing bunch of 6 finally formed. By the top of the climb the leaders margin was reduced to 3 minutes with 25 km to travel. Given there was a wind assisted 10 km descent to the finish line both Zeth and Ben still appeared to have first and second stitched up. Over the undulating terrain approaching the descent, the chasing bunch made large gains on the leading two. By the start of the downhill section the pursuers were only 30 seconds behind and in sight of the exhausted two. There was no time to relax as the smell of victory and the fast descent gave Zeth and Ben new found strength. But with only 3 km to the finish the chasers finally caught the two who had been away the best part of 100 km. As the bunch prepared for the sprint for the line both Zeth and Ben gave one last effort, attempting to get away again but this was all in vain as the groups speeds reached 60+km/h. The bunch sprint ended with Carnegie Caulfield's Brendan Gilhome (Mildara Blass/Gran Prix Cycles) taking the honours in 3:29:31 over the current Victorian 100km Champion Paul Anders and L Robertson. In the 50km U17 race Carnegie Caulfield's Johnny Clarke took second behind A James in a tight sprint while the U15's contested a 24km race seeing Carnegie Caulfield's Michael Ford lead home B Vervaart.
