Men

There were around 40.000 spectators in Roosendaal who paid 20 Guilders for their ticket (about $US 10). The professionals raced 36 laps of the circuit for 100 kilometres in total. The first attacks were made by Richard Virenque, Santiago Botero and Servais Knaven (who became a father last Saturday). However, nobody escaped for long. For much of the race, Leon van Bon was the last man in the peloton.

This all changed with 7 laps to go when Van Bon attacked. After a couple of laps in front, the situation was 1 Van Bon, 2 Botero, 3 peloton. However, Virenque attacked from the peloton with Knaven, chasing the two leaders. With one to go, it was Botero, Virenque, Van Bon, and Knaven, but Virenque took the race after a strong jump.

Richard Virenque, who receoved 35,000 guilders start money was happy about the enthusiastic audience. He only starts in one criterium in Holland this year, his second ever.

Michael Boogerd was in Roosendaal as a spectator. "I wanted to start, but I have to wait for a few days. I'll try to start in the Tour of Pijnacker next Saturday."

Women

In just the first kilometer, a lot of riders were involved in a big fall, but no 'big names' came down. However, Chantal Polansky (22, South Africa) broke her pinky finger. In the local hospital they put her hand in plaster. "I hope I can go to Sydney. I was in a very good shape in the last few weeks and have still one selection race for the South african team for the Olympics," she said afterward.

After two laps there were several parts (of the peloton) on the parcours, and it was very fast. There were two leaders: Elsbeth Vink and Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel. In no time at all, they had more than 1 minute.

The peloton lost more and more time, and there were no chances for the champions: Hanka Kupfernagel (Ger), Susanne Ljungskog (Swe), Mirjam Melchers (Ned), Evy van Damme (Bel) and Rikke Sandhoj Olsen (Den). In the last lap Leontien van Moorsel attacked Elsbeth Vink and won with 22 seconds to spare.
