Cascade Cycling Classic - NEOregon, USA, July 19-23, 2000Stage 5 (men) - July 22: Tumalo Stage Park, 124 kmReinhart again, Moninger inches aheadBy John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent Saturday's race in Tumalo State Park, held on a 7-mile circuit with about 500 feet of climbing per lap, presented the last good opportunity for anyone to unseat race leaders Bruckner and Moninger. Nothing really happened in the former case, as the game but overmatched 800.com team found itself on the defensive throughtout their 70-mile race, as AutoTrader.com attempted to move Young or Pam Schuster past 800.com's Wilhelmi and sweep the top three spots. However, AutoTrader.com team director Mike Neel, best known for his role in the 7-Eleven squad of the 1980's, showed that he brings more than tactical smarts to the table; after attacking Wilhelmi through much of the stage, he had the entire team go to the front of the field when the 800.com rider suffered an untimely flat...and had them slow the pack down until Wilhelmi could rejoin. At the finish, it was nearly a repeat of the previous evening, as Reinhart again won, with Young and Guerrero flip-flopping for second and third, four seconds ahead of the remnants of the field. Meanwhile, Mercury's Moninger took the stage win, but just couldn't seem to shake the tenacious Larsen. The early going featured a four-man break of Dean Meyer (G.S. Lombardi's/OFOTO.com), Kirk Willett (Mercury), Brendan Vesty (Navigators), and Dave Zabriskie (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist). Gaining a maximum of 1:47, the group grew to nine when a quintet of chasers bridged, but dissention within and a hard chase by the 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist squad of third-overall Clark Sheehan brought them back into the fold by the sixth of eleven laps. However, the feisty Vesty didn't stay there long; against the best advice of team director Ed Beamon, Vesty attacked solo into a strong headwind on the eighth lap; his effort lasted ten miles, till Mercury decided that it was time to get down to business. And get down to it they did, as Moninger attacked on the next-to-last climb, and was covered by Larsen. By the top, they had been joined by ten others and had thirty seconds' lead; however, it came down fast, and it all came back together at the beginning of the last lap...save for one rider: 18-year old Will Frischkorn (Mercury), who immediately counterattacked. He was soon joined by Larsen, then Moninger and Jamie Drew (Mercury); at the finish, it was Moninger by a second over Larsen, with Frischkorn and Drew seven seconds further back. Overall, it was essentially a two-man race, with Moninger leading Larsen by a less-than-cozy nine seconds with just one stage remaining.
