Cascade Cycling Classic - NEOregon, USA, July 19-23, 2000Stage 1 (men) - July 19: Three Sisters Loop, 177 kmMoninger continues run of successBy John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent The 2000 Cascade Classic (July 19-23) kicked off with the 110-mile Bachelor ESB Road Race. Contested on the famous Three Sisters loop in central Oregon, the stage included 4600 feet of climbing, and proved to be an exciting start to what is traditionally one of the toughest stage races in the U.S. The attacks began early on, with the first significant break forming on the approach to the first K.O.M. sprint; the quartet of Steve Larsen (L.L. Bean/Mongoose), Doug Ziewacz (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist), Will Frischkorn and Scott Moninger (both Mercury) quickly gained a lead of nearly a minute and stayed away through both the first and second mountains sprints (won by Ziewacz and Larsen, respectively). However, a hard chase brought a group of about 40 up to them following the ensuing descent at around 38 miles. Just two miles later, it was the turn of the 'home' team, the Pacific Northwest-based Nutra Fig pro squad, as Ron Schmeer went on the attack, gaining 1:25 before being joined by amateur teammate Aaron Olson, Jeff Corbett and Dave Zabriskie (both 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist), Kiwi Nathan Dahlberg (Village Peddler), Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), and the Mercury duo of Frischkorn and Kirk Willett. With most of the eight pitching in, they built up a lead of four minutes by the 60-mile mark. However, then the chase began: their lead cut in half by mile 75, the group was all but caught just before the feed zone, where the aggressive young Frischkorn attacked. Olson tried to follow, but was unable to bridge, and was soon caught and passed by two counterattacking groups from the remnants of the field: Moninger and Larsen in the first, Tony Cruz (Saturn) and Clark Sheehan (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist) in the other. The former group caught Frischkorn, making a triad in the lead. However, following a furious chase, Cruz and Sheehan joined after the day's final climb, and, with just ten miles to go, there was a five-man break over a minute up on the field. With speedster Cruz likely to take the stage should it come to a sprint, the Mercury riders took turns attacking. First, Frischkorn goes and was joined by Larsen, but the two were hauled back by Cruz. Then it was Moninger's turn. With Sheehan as his only company, and with Cruz and Larsen debating who should do the work to bring them back, they stayed away till the finish, with Moninger winning the stage in a two-up sprint. Frischkorn, after being off the front for the majority of the day, soloed in for a well deserved third. Overall, Moninger took a five second lead over Sheehan, with Frischkorn third at 0:13.
