Canadian National Track Championships - CNBromont, Canada, July 6-9, 2000Cloutier dual Canadian ChampionAlexandre Cloutier of Ste-Foy, Que., won both the 4,000-metre individual pursuit and the points race Saturday at the Tim Hortons Track Nationals while rain once again put the schedule makers to work. The women's match sprint final between Tanya Dubnicoff of Winnipeg and Lori-Ann Muenzer of Toronto was postponed after the first race of the best-of-three which Dubnicoff won. The men's match sprint final was also postponed. More rain is in the forecast for Sunday. In the 4,000 pursuit, Cloutier won the gold medal final against Matt Hansen of King City, Ont., clocking five minutes and 01.232 seconds while Hansen finished in 5.01.946. Robert Veroba of Calgary won the bronze medal race. In the 40 kilometre points race, Cloutier totalled 43 points with Glen Rendall of Orleans, Ont., second at 26 and Hansen third at 21. Cloutier has paid his dues in the sport. The 26-year-old has cycled competitively for 12 years and is savoring his first two career national titles. "The pursuit is my best event and that's the victory I'm most happy with," said Cloutier, who is also the guide rider for Paralympic champion Julie Cournoyer of Montreal. "It was very close. I started slowly and I knew for the last two turns had to give everything I had." In the women's 3,000-metre individual pursuit, high school teacher Mandy Poitras of Langley, B.C., claimed a sixth career national title defeating Andrea Hannos of Vancouver in the final. Erin Carter of Ste. Anne, Man., took the bronze. "With a kilometre to go I knew I was pretty even with Andrea," said Langley, who has three national crowns in the pursuit. "I always start out at my own pace and for the final laps my coach lets me know the situation."
