Day 3 - July 9: Junior M/W criteriums

Criterium doubles for many

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

The 2000 U.S.C.F. Junior National Championships concluded on Sunday with the criterium title races, held on a 0.8-mile circuit in East Allentown, Pennsylvania. And, while the criterium course bore no resemblance whatsover to the previous day's road race, there were six riders who managed to win both, thereby proving that a sufficiently talented rider can succeed on any terrain.

Of the six, perhaps the most impressive performance was that of Rahsaan Bahati and the Mercury team in the Mens 17-18 race. Going into the race with just three riders - one of whom, Jon Retseck, was forced to withdraw on just the second lap due to a stomach ailment - the Mercury duo of Bahati and Sterling Magnell nonetheless dominated the larger CRCA/Hot Tubes and Team Devo formations in their 50 km event. With eleven laps to go, Bahati got into a four-man break with time trial winner Patrick McCarty (Richardsons Bike Mart), defending bronze medalist Michael Friedman (Fraysse's Sport CCC), and newly-crowned Junior World Cross-Country champ Walker Ferguson (Team Devo). Finding themselves on the outside looking in, CRCA/Hot Tubes sent Dustin Rademacher up to join the move, with Merlin's Andrew Minard in tow. With all the top junior teams represented by one rider each, this looked like the move...until Bahati's teammate Magnell stormed across the gap, tilting the odds in favor of Mercury. The result was almost a foregone conclusion, as Bahati beat Rademacher by a bike length for the win, with Friedman repeating for the bronze.

However, Bahati's win wasn't the only high point of the day, as each race had its own story. In the Men's and Women's 10-12 race, Tejay Van Garderen and Cindy Lakatosh each won their third event of the week; avid mountain biker Amber Osorio soloed to victory in the Women's 13-14 event; Tyler Farrar again outsprinted the competition to take the Men's 15-16 title; and Lauren Franges did the same in the Women's 17-18 race, upsetting the plans of time trial winner Sarah Uhl and the Trek/CYBC club.

Afterwards, comments on both the three days of racing were very positive, both in reference to the events themselves (riders raved both about the courses and the organization, particularly in comparison to the '99 Nationals debacle in Cincinnati) and about the performances of America's future stars. Junior National Team coach Danny Van Haute thinks that this is a team primed for success at the Junior Worlds: "Last year, we had Will Frischkorn and Michael Creed, but I think this year's team is even better."

The Junior National Track Championships begin this week in Trexlertown, PA.
