Day 2 - July 8: Junior M/W road races

Mercury sprinter Bahati surprises the rest

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

For better or worse, Mercury junior rider Rahsaan Bahati has acquired a reputation as being 'just' a sprinter. However, that reputation was overturned in today's Mens 17-18 Road Race, just one of a whole series of unexpected, though unquestionably deserving, race winners at the 2000 U.S. Junior National Road Race Championships.

Held about 20 miles west of Trexlertown, PA, in the town of Kempton, these Junior Nationals have proven to be a far cry from last year's disastrous Cincinnati Nationals. The circuits - 9 miles for riders under 15, 15 for those over 15 - had something for everyone: short steep climbs, twisty country roads, picturesque scenery. Men's 13-14 winner Luke Pennington referred to it as "the best course I ever ridden," while Navigators director Ray Cipollini added that "it was a good course for a selection race," while adding that it was a highly selective event. One imagines that Men 17-18 Rahsaan Bahati would agree...

In the shortened 105 km Men's 17-18 road race, things quickly came down to a three-man show with Bahati, local teammate Jon Retseck, and time trial winner Patrick McCarty escaping from a main group of 30 and quickly building an advantage of over two minutes, despite the presence of such strong junior teams as CRCA/Hot Tubes and Team Devo in the field. As the trio entered the final lap, they had a large enough lead that the Mercury duo began working McCarty over, taking turns attacking till, with under four miles remaining, Bahati went clear and stayed clear for the win, maybe even surprising himself a bit: "I'm the sprinter on the team, so I figured that Pat wouldn't expect that I'd be the one to go."

Not surprised was National Coach Danny Van Haute, who noted that "a lot of people didn't have faith in Rahsaan, but we took him over to race in Europe and he did fine." As a result of his win, Bahati is an automatic qualifier to October's Junior World's team.

But Bahati's performance wasn't the day's only surprise. In the Womens 17-18 race, hot tip Sarah Uhl (Trek/CYBC) was nipped by training partner and perennial rival Lauren Franges, who wisely didn't succumb to the urge to launch her sprint too early. In the Men's 15-16 road race, Pennsylvania native Kyle Wagner appeared to have built himself a solid two-minute lead going into the final lap, but ultimately ended up second to Tyler Farrar, who spoke about the race afterwards: "He (Wagner) had such a big lead that, I knew if I stayed in the pack, it was all over - I had to just go for it and see what happened."

What happened was that he overtook and passed Wagner, ending up 1:20 ahead of the gallant Wagner and over four minutes ahead of the main field.

The Junior Nationals conclude Sunday with the Criterium Nationals, conducted in East Allentown, PA.
