Day 1 - July 6: Junior
M/W time trials
Young roadies shine at Trexlertown
By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent
The 2000 U.S. Junior National Road Championships kicked off today in
Trexlertown, PA with the Junior National Time Trial. Conducted on a
rolling 10-kilometer course along beautiful Lake Nockamixon, the day's
racing included something for everyone: local success, breakthrough
performances - and a controversy over the simplest piece of equipment.
The Lehigh Valley is best known in cycling circles for producing some
of America's top track cyclists, but, if today's results were any indication,
it may soon become known for its roadies instead. Six of the 24 medalists
hail from the immediate area, including hot prospects Sarah Uhl (Trek/CYCB)
and Jon Retseck (Mercury Cycling Team). Uhl, who won all three events
in the Women's 15-16 category last year, showed that moving up to the
17-18 ranks wasn't too daunting, as she won the 20km event by 17 seconds
over another local, Lauren Franges (Tri-State Velo).
For Uhl, it was a dream come true to win so close to home: "It was
really, really awesome because I worked a lot for this - I came to the
course a lot because I live really close to here....it was really a
challenge, so that makes the win even more special." And as for Retseck,
his second in the Men's 17-18 race represented a step forward from last
year, when he placed fifth in the same event. Retseck, too, appreciated
being on his home turf: "It's nice having all my friends up here, and
my family - and the roads we're racing on are the roads I train on."
But the local success was just a part of the story. Equally interesting
were the performances of some of the 15-16 year olds, particularly that
of Blake Caldwell (Unattached), whose time of 23:52.7 was not only the
fastest of the day for the Men's 15-16 year olds, but was also the fastest
of the day, period. It caught the attention of National U-23 Coach Danny
Van Haute, who thinks that Caldwell is "the future of junior cycling
right now. Beating an 18-year old by eight seconds, he's a good prospect
for USA Cycling...it's going to be interesting watching him come up
through the ranks."
Speaking of coming up through the ranks, the winner of the Men's 17-18
time trial was Richardson Bike Mart's Patrick McCarty, making a major
leap forward from his ninth of last year. However, McCarty's victory
was a nailbiter - and not because he had to wait for other competitors
to finish. The fastest time among the 17-18 year olds was actually set
by Dustin Rademacher (CRCA/Hot Tubes), but Rademacher was disqualified
for using a non-certified helmet. His team manager filed a protest,
stating both that officials had seen the helmet before the start and
had not said anything, and that other riders had also used the same
brand and had not been DQ'ed. The protest took well over an hour to
resolve; however, it was ultimately decided that the rules are clear-cut:
the helmet was definitely illegal, the manager had evidently been told
about it the week before at the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic, and therefore
he had no grounds for protest.
While it was unfortunate for Rademacher, the real victim in this was
McCarty, who found his victory unfairly diminished. For his part, McCarty
made a display of class somewhat unexpected of such a young rider: while
on the podium, he accepted the national champion's jersey, but declined
to don it in sympathy for his disqualified rival. It was a low-key but
upbeat ending to what had been a great day of racing with one glitch.
The U.S. Junior Road Nationals continue on Saturday with the road
race, and conclude on Sunday with the criterium events.
