Gilfillan and Newton claim time trial titles

Ceris Gilfillan and Chris Newton both turned in dominating performances to win their respective classes at the BCF National Time Trial championships at the weekend. Taking place over a sporting course, near Carnforth in North Lancashire, both races featured several Olympic hopefuls and some of Britain 's best young riders.

In the women's race, Gilfillan, fresh from fifth place in the Hewlett Packard stage race in America, showed why she is currently Britain's most exciting female road rider, by beating her experienced Alsager/Addidas team-mates Sara Symington and Yvonne McGregor by almost a minute and a half. Gilfillan is only 20 years of age and looks a certainty to ride in the Olympics.

Chris Newton's win in the men's race was not unexpected - the Middlesborough rider has been in winning form all season long with Premier Calendar victories and impressive road wins on the continent with the GB track team, as they prepare for the Olympics. Still, the one minute, forty-seven seconds he put into runner-up Tim Buckle was an outstanding ride.

Other noteworthy rides came from 19 year old Tom Southam and 21 year-old Dan Bridges, neither of whom have a reputation as time trial specialists, but who, in finishing fifth and sixth, put several experienced specialists behind them. Another young rider performing well was 17 year old Keiran Page who, despite being a Junior, managed a stunning tenth place, less than six minutes down on the winner.
