A field of 75 riders started today the Fuji Xerox Cycle Tour of Wellington with a 40km circuit around the streets of Lower Hutt. A fast first stage saw an average speed of 43kmh with most riders keen to see the front of the race each lap.

Many riders tried to attack but the fast pace of the race stopped any serious attempts. The Aussie Caravello, the Avanti and the Fuji Xerox teams looked very strong today, but Robin Reid was the stage winner and is wearing the Yellow Jersey into tomorrow's stage from Wellington to Masterton.
