Tour Down Under - Cat. 2.3Australia, January 18 - 23, 2000Stage 5 - January 22, Gawler to Tanunda, 156 kmZabel finallyCourtesy of John Doggett-Williams After a fairly quiet start to the Tour Down Under this year, German sprinter, Erik Zabel showed the rest that his trip to South Australia was worth the plane ticket. After a hard day's racing, the Telekom rider outsprinted Massimiliano Mori (Saeco-Gaggia), and Jacob Moe Rasmussen (Memory Card-Jack & Jones) in a depleted bunch finish. The peloton had to contend with 156 km of racing through the South Australian wine country, with the obligatory two sprints and hill climbs along the way. The conditions were once again cool - 20 degrees celsius or so, with a light wind blowing. While the race so far has been fairly tame in terms of any hard racing by the European pro's, they changed their minds today and turned up the pace. Riders were suffering from the outset, as the peloton climbed out of Gawler towards the first sprint of the day. There was a split after 15 km, with a large group of riders getting off the front of the bunch, with most of the driving being done by the European teams. Tour contender, Stuart O'Grady was not to be seen up the front and was clearly having an ordinary day. However, both Erik Zabel (Ger, Telekom) and Robbie McEwen (Aus, Farm Frites) were showing signs of form and were prominent in the break. The first sprint into Jacobs Creek was won by an Australian rider, Allan Davis, riding for the United Water-AIS team, followed by Guillaume Auger of Big Mat-Auber93. After this the peloton slowly splintered under the pressure and sharp hills. The first time up the steep climb at Menglers Hill, it was the Dane Allen Johansen who took the points. He was urged on by thousands of fans who had come out to see the race, for want of something better to do on a Saturday. By the two-thirds mark, there were only 18 riders left in the race, and these had split into a group of 8 chased by 10. The bunch was more than 11 minutes back, with the retirement of note being sprinter Jimmy Casper of La Francaise des Jeux. The groups came together for the finish which was led out by Zabel, zig-zagging across the road to win comparatively easily from Massimiliano Mori and Jacob Moe Rasmussen. The fiasco of yesterday (where the photo finish failed, and not all four judges were able to verify) was not repeated and Zabel was awarded the win. In the overall, there was no change as French Ag2R rider, Gilles Maignan was still the leader followed by Steffen Wesemann (Ger, Telekom) and Stuart O'Grady (Aus, CA) in equal second place. O'Grady was disappointed with his ride today, as it was probably his last chance to gain enough time to wrest the lead from Maignan. Tomorrow is a fairly flat and fast stage around Adelaide, and it is unlikely that a large breakway containing either Wesemann or O'Grady will be allowed to escape by Ag2R. For his part, Zabel was happy with the win: "I wanted to win a stage, but not necessarily the overall," he said. "Today, I thought my time had come." Other notes: * Yesterday's mix up involving the finish was resolved by photographer Graham Watson, who developed his picture of the finish line later that evening. It clearly showed Wesemann was the winner. * Graham Brown, of the United Water-AIS team injured his shoulder quite badly in a clash with a spectator on stage 3, and wore it bandaged yesterday. He was, however one of the last to finish. * The other rider who was last to finish was teammate, Brett Lancaster who apparently got lost on the climb up Torrens Hill before being redirected by several million spectators. 1 Erik Zabel (Ger) Telekom 3.41.43
