Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums

Victoria, Australia, January 2, 2000

There were 105 starters for the regular Sunday morning criterium race at Glenvale Cres. Mulgrave, Victoria. The top end of the field was as strong as ever despite the absence of a few trackies still away after the Christmas carnivals.

A grade had the "pleasure" of encountering four VIS teammates and temporary teammate Tom Leaper (Navigare) tuning up for the Skilled Bay Series which starts Wed 5 Jan. Frequent attacking, as usual, saw the establishment of short lived breakaways until the right combination went up the road. VIS Brad Davidson (who will ride for Sunsmart/Mitsubishi in the Tour Down Under) escaped the bunch with well-known club rider James Taylor in the second half of the race. A second VIS, Baden Cooke (riding AIS colours in the TDU), rattled across the gap with Robert Boag leaving the remaining riders trying to get organised. Despite the hard working bunch rapidly closing down on the break, there was still time for foxing before the sprint. Baden Cooke made sure of the win over James Taylor. Brad Davidson's efforts for his teammate left him in third while Robert Boag rolled in fourth.

With the biggest field of the day, B grade also had a few early jumps, then the cream rose and an eight-rider break developed. As it became apparent to the leaders that the bunch was not going to chase hard the attacks started to come from the front bunch. Anna Wilson caused the production of plenty of lactic acid with repeated attempts with her characteristic tuck position offering no draft at all. Despite her best efforts veteran Chris Boone nipped in ahead of Wilson in the finishing sprint with Robert Tidey third ahead of another noted vet sprinter, Chris Salisbury.

Another young lady, in the person of Dellys Franke, took the top step of the podium in C grade. A successful mountain biker with Olympic aspirations, Franke took on 24 others and sprinted superbly to secure the win over Andrew Shaw, Stuart Campbell and David Downing.

D grade suffered a tiny field of 10 however the ride of Ben Phillips is worthy of comment. Youngster Ben escaped with veteran John Groves with 20 minutes remaining then quickly broke Groves and soloed away to a convincing win. Groves recovered sufficiently to take the second place from Scott Brewster. Fourth place went to plucky Sarah Ambelton whose gutsy riding shows great promise.

Doug Crow wins with panache

A new millennium in the world of cycle racing dawned at Hillingdon in London with an action packed race that saw Doug Crow (Twickenham CC) return from his Christmas break and show the rest he hadn’t lost any of his form with a stylish solo win in a class field that included former world champion, Bradley Wiggins riding in the UK’s WCCP colours.

The race was held in milder conditions than late under leaden skies but with the overall table getting congested at the top, there was a lot of attacking going on with Pete Swettenham (Twickenham CC), Jason Streather (Anglia Sport/Condor) and Bradley Wiggins among those prominent at the front. Overall leader Bill Butterworth was also prominent in attack but as befits a leader of the overall, he was marked very closely by his closet contenders.

It wasn’t until late in the race that Doug Crow managed to get a gap and solo his way to an impressive win, despite some sizzling attacks from Bradley Wiggins out to get his legs ready for the Berlin 6 day. Every time Wiggins went to the front, the field was lined out behind but as soon as he sat up, the splits that had started to open up, closed up and it was big bunch finish for second place.

This wasn’t unexpected because when the wind doesn’t blow at Hillingdon, you can normally bet that the majority of the field will stay together for a sprint finish to test the judges skills. In the sprint for the line, the winner for the last two weeks, Pete Swettenham, made it a one/two for Twickenham CC out sprinting Jason Streather and new arrival at the winter series, Jon Johnston (Festival RC). Special mention also to Susan Carter (Letchworth Velo) who showed the men that the girls can mix it with boys with many a stint on the front of the chasers.
