Atkins (Tas) Twickenham CC Winter Series # 6Hillingdon, England, December 26, 1999 Swettenham makes it a double in last race of the century Courtesy of www.echelon-velo.co.uk With Christmas 1999 now just a memory, the boxing day winter series race was no gift for the in-form Peter Swettenham. With directors from Sport and Publicity present and being very generous with primes, prizes as well as applause, the race was very fast early on. When combined with the cold and wet from a rather large water splash on the back straight, the first 8km were extremely hard and soon the race split into little groups as the cold crept into many riders legs, sapping their strength. Swettenham was in very dominant form, showing everyone that the poor form he had only a few weeks ago was just a small blip in his schedule and that the legs of old were returning. With Swettenham and Mick Hill again being the stronger of the riders, a break of five soon formed with Swettenham and Hill sharing the primes. With the three Twickenham riders in the break attacking, the two other riders in the leading group were getting anything but a smooth ride. The attacking though soon took its toll and two of the Twickenham riders, Dave Griffiths and Bill Butterworth lost contact. But showed great courage though by digging in, and the two did manage to rejoin the leaders at the head of the race. Meanwhile, a group of 4 chasers had detached itself from the rapidly shrinking main bunch. The four riders consisted of Peter Noble, out to impress in front of his sponsors Team Sport and Publicity, Mick McManus (Twickenham CC), noted sprinter Stuart Jackson (Heffs Cycles) and mountain biker Jody Crawforth. McManus though had a slow puncture and had to give best by sliding off the back but managing to hang for 10th place and now beginning to show some of his old form. Also coming into form is Larry Hickmott (Team Synergy), dogged by mechanical problems and the cold. The rider to catch the eye most though was Jason Streather (Amore-e-Vita) who is set to announce his new team in the new year after feeling let down by Amore-e-Vita. Streather, who like most of the UK and his brother Jamie, has been fighting off the viruses going around, was in tremendous form. And how it showed The finishing sprint though was won by Swettenham from Streather and one of the strong riders in the group, Mick Hill. Overall leader, Bill Butterworth came in 4th with team mate Dave Griffiths in 5th place. Results Elite - 52 km 1. Peter Swettenham(Twickenham CC) 2. Jason Streather (Amore-e-Vita) 3.
