Torrential overnight rain, with significant bouts of hail, and still the riders turned up to meet the challenge on the sodden roads in Mulgrave, Victoria. With the weather on the improve, small C and D grade fields took to the course and as the sun shone through the overcast the A and B grade riders began arriving. The combined field of 67 looks trivial on paper but the racing was just as intense.

Ten minutes before start time it appeared A and B would be riding together again due to lack of numbers. Then the guys who had been training in the nearby hills arrived, warm and ready to rock! The A graders took a few laps to get going, then the hammer went down and the attacks and counter-attacks started flying. After many failed attempts Karl Becker, resplendent in the new strip of the recently formed St. Kilda cycling club, was away with Ashley Sheard (Breaka) soon across and working hard. The group behind tried in vain to reduce the gap to something bridgeable due in part to Sheard’s Breaka teammate Brent McCaig. At the bell Sheard cleared out on Becker and soloed in to a comfortable win. Becker was run down on the back of the course, Bendigo’s Breaka boys 1-2 when McCaig rolled in ahead of the tight sprint for third. Ashley Goewie showed Paul Kenny the value of a throw by taking third by the smallest of margins.

B grade took to the drying road and stiff breeze like ducks to water, and proceeded to hand out the punishment to each other so that the field was in two groups before half distance. The lead group fragmented and rejoined and fragmented again under the pressure of frequent attacks. In the end Blackburn rider Jamie Cornelius led home Kis Gemmel (NZ) from Mauro Alvarez (Columbia) and Thomas Campagna (Germany) with the visitors unable to answer Cornelius’s strength at the end. The international flavour was not confined to the placegetters. 1956 Olympian "Peppe" Chiesa (Italy) took the challenge laid down by some of the youngsters and was not shamed, although not in the money.

Geordon Murray (15) took the cash in C grade and looks ready for promotion. Perennial sprinter Eddie Perez took second from Ben Cleveland with Phil Levy fourth. The race was run on still wet roads, at a steady if not blistering pace. The riders finished as a group, gritty and wet from spray off the wheels but upright and safe.

D grade’s little race was similarly wet and steady, the attrition rate went up with the pace towards the end leaving seven to sprint. Martin Ryan led home serial minor placegetters John Groves and Mick Braund with Martin Munoz trailing in fourth.
