Oppressive conditions prevailed tonight. 35C and a strong, gusty north wind took a huge toll on those who fronted the starter. A total start list of 145 riders was a little disappointing given that "The Queen of the Park" race was on offer, however the 21 women who contested the race had no complaints as to the quality of the field.

The women started together due to the smaller than expected field. The bunch rode together for the early part of the race until a couple of ill-fated attacks lit the fuse. As Louise Gomes was reeled in the new National Road Champ Anna Wilson surged putting a group of five out of the race immediately. Not getting it all her own way, Anna had to look out for the likes of Victorian Road Champ Jennie McPherson, MTB duo Dellys Franke and Anna Bayliss, the experience of former Aussie Road Champ Debbie Hobbs and Swiss visitor Doppman Priska who impressed with her strength. Anna put in a big effort at four laps to go which finally broke the elastic and she soloed to victory from Doppman Priska who won the hotly contested field sprint. Noted local trackie Jessica Amy just nipped in ahead of Debbie Hobbs fourth, Jennie McPherson was fifth. The B grade placings went to Alison Coe from Sarah Ambelton and Kerrie Donlon.

Speaking after the race Wilson said "that was harder than Sunday, the jet lag has really cut in". Wilson was the subject of the attentions of a representative of the Dutch press who is preparing an article on Van Moorsel’s chances in the Olympics. Good luck Leontien, you’ll need it!

The A grade men’s race saw De Nardi - Pasta Montegrappa neo-pro Andrew Stalder take what was the sprint of the season so far from sprinter Hilton Clarke jnr., who has benefited from his racing the Bay Series and Sorrento Cup for Mildara Blass. The duo of James Taylor and Robert Tighello (State Road and Crit Champ) got it wrong tonight, the pair normally have first place sewn up from a small group but Stalder’s finish was too good. Having escaped around the midway point the foursome set about consolidating their lead and then fought out the finale four abreast at the line. A well-timed throw made the difference for Stalder, as there was less than half a metre between first and fourth.

B grade suffered a series of withering attacks early, then allowed a group of nine to form and steal the race. Another " balls out" sprint, multi-sport veteran Russell Newnham leading home Queensland visitor Andrew Blackman with Travers Nuttal spinning his U17 gears for all he was worth to finish third ahead of another junior in Ryan Kelly.

The attempt by six strong men in C grade to slip away at the ten minute mark looked like succeeding until the sprinters got organised and brought the escapees back with only three laps remaining. Mark French and Geordon Murray, both gear restricted U17 riders, took the top two placings from the aging ’74 Austral winner Ike Collings (60) who is more inclined to solo than sprint these days. Shannon Rademaker filled out the placings.

The small D grade field was treated to an early finish in order to clear the road for the women, and no one complained! The heat and wind took a heavy toll and about half the field survived to sprint. Peter Burchell out-sprinted triathlete Andrew Beasley, veterans Mick Braund and David Bolton completing the placings.

Heffron park handicap criteriums

It was with 3-4 laps remaining that a depleted A-grade bunch caught the B/C field, which had come together at approximately half distance in the blustery conditions. Aparently, 60-65 km/hr turns down the main straight by British time trial wiz Stuart Dangerfield had done much to whittle out the weaker A-graders. Dangerfield, Stuart Campbell, and mountain bike ace Paul Rowney then promptly escaped of the front of the bunch, taking B-grade youngster(?) Higgerson with them.

In the sprint to the line, it was the former self-proclaimed King of Heffron, Stuart Campbell (aka computer), who took the honours from Dangerfield, Rowney and Higgerson. Best of the rest in the bunch sprint was B-grader Paul Hanley, the second time in consecutive weeks he has led the field home and placed in the money. Looks like it's A-grade for him next week. Within the same bunch sprint lurked W. Gould who was awarded first C-grader.
