Results and Reports for January 18NZMBA National Mountain Bike SeriesCardrona, New Zealand, January 15-16, 2000 Courtesy of Jeff Lyall Reigning New Zealand Downhill Pro-Elite Champion Glen Sisarich took his first win of the 2000 NZMBA National Mountain Bike Series at Cardrona, Wanaka this weekend setting a course record for the fast, smooth course. Competition for second place was fierce with 19 year old Tim Nelson, the series leader, taking second place from John Kirkcaldie by .07 of a second. This result leaves Nelson at the top of the table with Kirkcaldie and Sisarich tied for second. Vanessa Quin, the current womens champion, rode consistently to win the Pro-Elite Womens Downhill race, finishing 36 seconds ahead of Lisa Horlor who had the fastest seeding time. Kirsten Drabble rounded out the top three a further five seconds back. Series Leader Wayne Hiscock made it two wins from two starts in the Mens Pro-Elite Cross country race on the scenic course at the top of the Cardrona skifield, which is the highest course in New Zealand at 1900m above sea level. The current Men's champion Jon Hume has yet to race. Second place went to Jeremy Houltham who also maintains the lead in the under 23 Espoir category. Third place went to Paul Bishop who rode a fine race to go from mid-pack early on into the top three. Sadie Parker holds onto the Pro-Elite Womens Series title despite finishing second today behind 1999 Cross Country champion Susy Pryde. Parker lead in the first lap, but was soon passed by Pryde on an open course that suited her road racing background. Lisa Savage continued her consistant early season from finishing third. The bigs news circulating during the warmup was the arrival of new UK Cyclo Cross champion and professional road rider with Palmans Ideal, Roger Hammond. The powerful pro has a reputation for grinding fields in the winter series into little groups several laps adrift and many riders were expecting the worst in one of the biggest fields of the series so far. And to make life more difficult, the wind was blowing down the hill, just as it had been way back in race 1. It was cold, very cold indeed. As always with these races, a good warm-up is essential and personally, trying to keep up with Elite rider, Jason Streather was sending the heart rate up into the 90% plus zones and the race hadn't even started. When it did, Peter Noble (Team Sport & Publicity) attacked out of the blocks and opened up a big gap as the bunched took its time getting up to speed which it did within the first lap and Peter's lead soon melted away. From then-on, the attacks came and went until Doug Crow (Twickenham CC) made a bid for freedom. Despite the pace being set by the large peloton, Crow managed to open up a sizable gap with Peter Swettenham dictating tactics to his Twickenham teammates. That is until Roger Hammond decided it was time for some interval work and proceeded to the front of the bunch upon which, the peloton strung out in a single line with it breaking in several places as Crow's lead soon dwindled. Once he was reeled in, Peter Swettenham started the decisive attack and Mick Hill soon saw the danger and joined him. At the top of the hill, into the face of a strong wind, Roger Hammond showed the riders what an attack really was as he jumped clear and crossed to the leaders, followed shortly after by Doug Crow. That was race over for the rest as in the leading group were four of the strongest riders in the race and no-one had the firepower to catch them. The only hiccup was a front wheel puncture to Hammond, but a lap out and he was back with the leaders as they all shared the work. Behind, the large peloton grew restless and an attack by Jason Streather, Jon Johnston, Vince Freeman and Dave Griffiths took them clear of the group. Then, one of the Team Sport and Publicity riders unselfishly attacked with teammate Peter Noble in tow, taking him, Team Synergy's Larry Hickmott and Mick McManus (Twickenham CC) to within spitting distance of the break. They managed to join as they topped the hill into the wind. Soon after, Elite rider Stuart Barrie (Feltham RC) joined the leaders. This chasing group soon drew away from the large peloton and although not making any ground on the leaders, they managed to hold them for much of the race with the driving force being Jon Johnston. The pace being set by the chase group was hot and for some, it was a matter of survival and I have the heart rate data to prove it! The four leaders remained together until the end, lapping much of the field in the process. Coming down the back straight, discussion raged on how to contest the sprint and in the end, Roger Hammond was more than happy to lead it out (he didn't need the BCF points after all!) and give Peter Swettenham and strong leadout, who did the business to hold off teammate Doug Crow who rode a strong race according to Swettenham and third was Mick Hill with Hammond sitting up for fourth. Shortly after, the sprint for 5th was very tactical. With a lap to go, the group lapped one of the many groups on the circuit only to sit up and wait for the first rider to set the pace for the sprint. In the end, Jon Jonhston (Festival RC) and Jason Streather went head to head with Stuart Barrie . On the line, Streather finished his last race before heading off to Lanzarote with another good result ahead of Stuart Barrie, Jon Johnston, Dave Griffiths, Vince Freeman and Mick McManus. Footnote: The race series had its first crashes, and two in one race when first Harry Webb (Twickenham CC) fell and, other than some cuts is okay, and then Russell Scott also fell but is reported to be okay as well.
