A small field today with the combination of steady, light rain and the National Road Championships within 100km. Those that did take the time to get to Glenvale Crescent in time had a hard workout just the same.

A and B grade raced together, with the pace high throughout. Many little moves went up the road only to be reeled back inside two or three laps. With ten minutes remaining a group of four formed and dangled twenty five metres off the front, then in the space of a lap the gap doubled ,then redoubled next time round. The balance of the field had no heart for the pursuit and decided to race for the fifth and sixth cash! Phil Gallagher made the most of the damp conditions leading from the last bend and holding Chris Bradford into second. LaTrobe Valley’s Chris Kypriotis third from Ryan Kelly a disappointed fourth. Lincoln Brown, just back from Phil Anderson’s camp at the base of Mt. Buller, won the bunch kick for the minors with Grant Cobb sixth.

C grade rode like men possessed, the pace was blistering as rider after rider threw himself into the task of riding off the rest of the bunch. Even though this resulted in the group being lined out in the gutter for lap after lap few were dropped and a rollicking sprint ensued. Rising youngster Geordon Murray got the nod over repeated placegetter Stuart Campbell, "fast" Eddie Perez took third with a determined 13y.o. Michael Ford fourth.

Racing under control for the first ten minutes suited the D graders as it obviated the need for a warm up in the wet conditions. Once the race began in earnest it became a race of attrition with the 14 dwindling to 12, 9, 7 then the final six who contested the sprint. Simon Lauchier was victorious over Shane Perkins from veterans Mick Braund and John Groves.

News from Portarlington in the National Championship Races is that Anna Wilson is now Australian Road Champ as well as UCI top rank and 1999 World Cup winner after beating home Alison Wright and Tracy Gaudry. This is great news for the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club’s "Queen of The Park" race to be held this Tuesday 18 Jan at 6pm at AFL Park. While a broken collarbone has removed Liz Tadich from the field and WA road champ and Sorrento Cup winner Hayley Rutherford has withdrawn due to work commitments, a strong field is assured. Current World Jnr Champ Rhana Demarte and former World Jnr Champ Narelle Peterson have indicated they will be racing as has Bay Series winner Karen Barrow, add in Wilson, Geraldine Denham (1999 Tour of NZ winner) and Tassie Institute’s Naomi Williams on the comeback trail to the list of A grade names. The local girls are going to have world class competition and the opportunity to ride for good money in both A&B grades thanks to the Grand Hotel of Frankston and Fitzroy Cycles.
