Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums

Melbourne, Australia, January 9, 2000

Courtesy of Mal Sawford

The finale of the Bay Series Crits saw a severely depleted start list for Carnegie's first race of the new millennium.

D Grade rode under control for the first 10 minutes of their race, and once the racing began, two strong riders attacked the bunch and quickly opened and held a commanding lead. The pair fought out a tight sprint, with Pablo Leone holding off Kym Scrutton. The bunch was lead home by veteran rider Mick Braund.

C Grade rode a fairly uneventful race, which saw the Crit debut of Tandem pair Russell Wolfe and Christine Fisher using the race as preparation for their campaign for selection to the Sydney Paralympics. The pair rode strongly, and lead at bell lap before wisely sitting up before the usual kamikaze sprint to the line began. The honours went to Scott Hawke from Justin Vincent, Stu Campbell and Phillip Levy.

Due to the small fields, 0.and B Grade rode a combined race, which would pay down to 6th place. An early break of 8 containing all the drivers helped by a little blocking from the bunch looked like deciding the result, but over the following laps the break grew to 15, and the pace became unsettled.

Ashley Gowie attacked the break, who sat up and allowed the remnants of the main bunch to rejoin. Gowie's attack was short lived, but he was one of the instigators of a 7 man break around the 40 minute mark which rode away with the race. He was joined by Robert Tidey, Karl Woods, Martin Fluendy, Justin Hogan, Mike Varski and Nick Witkamp. All 7 worked well until 3 to go when a little tactical riding and a light rain shower saw the pace slow and allowed 3 riders from the main field latch on at the bell. The sprint went to noted trackie Rob Tidey from Varski and Steve Martin.

Twickenham CC Winter Series #8

Swettenham wins his third

Perhaps it’s the prospect of a new bike that helps Peter Swettenham to keep on winning, or the prospect of a new season to make up for last year which was less than great for him. Whatever the reason, the hours being put in by Peter out training are certainly now paying dividends as he and Doug Crow continue their domination of the winter series.

It was a cold and sunny day that greeted the riders for race 8 in the Twickenham CC Winter Series at Hillingdon in London. With the good weather came some new faces signalling the start of the upcoming rush to get fit for the 2000 season The season starts in the UK in a little over six weeks, with the first Premier calendar event following two weeks later on March 12.

The first few laps saw the usual attacking and then the action got serious as Swettenham, Crow and others attacked one after the other. The pace was furious and soon the inevitable happened when the bunch split and two large groups formed with 12 riders in the lead. Swettenham was one of the driving forces and looked comfortable as he covered the dangerous moves and then threw in a few of his own. Under the pressure (which by this time was making the author of this review rather sick with the effort), the lead group split several times, with four riders going clear. It was no surprise that Swettenham was one of them along with last weeks winner, Doug Crow (Twickenham CC), Alan Leach (Team Sport and Publicity) and Tom Smith (Twickenham CC).

The main group was soon splitting as well with fast improving Larry Hickmott and Jason Streather among those doing the driving. Meanwhile, Bill Butterworth, the overall leader, had punctured, had a lap out and rejoined the front group of four. However, it seemed only a matter of time before the strongest riders lead the way and that was how it worked out as Crow and Swettenham forced their way clear with 12 laps to go.

The leading tandem then made a lot of ground on the rest as the riders who were once with them fell back to the chasing group which was starting to splinter as riders tried to get away. Putting in his best race of the series, Mick McManus (Twickenham CC) went clear with Jason Streather (Anglia Sport/Condor) and Stuart Jackson (Heffs Cycles). Twenty seconds behind was Peter Noble (Team Sport & Publicity) and Larry Hickmott (Team Synergy) who were caught with less than a lap to go by Vince Freeman (Terry Wright Cycles) and Paul Doherty (Heffs Cycles). The peloton was a further 30 seconds back.

Across the finish line, Swettenham had the better of Doug Crow in the sprint to reverse last weeks results. Less than a minute back, Jason Streather who seems to be getting stronger every week came in third in a repeat of last weeks results, while Mick McManus held on for a well deserved fourth position 15 seconds back. Stuart Jackson came in alone for fifth position at 1.20 seconds.

The next group in though made the judges work a bit, with a close sprint for sixth place with Vince Freeman taking it from Larry Hickmott, Paul Doherty and Peter Noble. The closest sprint though came from the main group sprinting for 10th place where Tom Smith, recovered from his earlier efforts, shot out from the group to win from some other fast men like Jon Johnston (Festival RC), Simon Whiten and the irrepressible Dave Griffiths. Just behind Griffiths was Jamie Streather, no slouch in a sprint and riding in his new colours of VC St Raphael and during the race showing immense strength with turns of speed up the climb that left the others standing.
