Main Page Men Women Men B Grade Kristjan's Diary Race 5 - St Kilda, January 9, 2000Courtesy of Jenny Kisler The first action of the men's race actually came in the celebrity race (which included Shane Kelly, Magnus Backstedt, Brett Aitken and Stuart O'Grady as well as several local "celebrities"). Stuart O'Grady fell off at one of the corners and managed to put a nice rip in his shorts and take off some skin! This crash was followed by one early in the race proper in the finishing straight with Rik McCaig (2nd overall) the rider of note on the ground. Those down took a lap out and rejoined the race with no-one retiring hurt. The first sprint was won by Baden Burke with Jeremy Hunt and Corey Sweet following him in. The second sprint was again won by Burke with Sweet and Scott Davis behind him. Again Corey Sweet tried an attack. This time a group containing Sweet, Stuart O'Grady, BJ McIntosh, Manuel Mori, Colin Sturgess and Scott Davis were able to get clear. The third sprint saw Corey Sweet come from last in the breakaway to pick up the points, with Davis and Sturgess taking the places. With five laps to go the break was brought back and the race came down to a bunch sprint. Graeme Brown sped through for a clear victory from Brett Aitken and Stephen Pate in third. Despite all of Sweet's efforts, Brett Aitken won the sprint title as well as the overall, and Jayco won the teams title. Alayna Burns won the first sprint from Karen Barrow and Sara Carrigan. The second sprint was also won by Alayna Burns from Joanne Robinson and Katie Mactier. With four and a half laps to go, Katie Mactier crashed and punctured (meaning she couldn't take a lap out and would have to chase), and was unable to catch the field. There was a huge disappointment for yellow jersey holder, Rochelle Gilmore. With a lap and a half to go, she punctured and required a bike change. Although a couple of her teammates stopped to try to help her chase the field, she wasn't able to make up the gap. The final sprint was won by Karen Barrow, meaning that she also took out the series. Bridget Evans took second with Alison Wright in third.
