Vuelta a Cuba - Cat. 2.5Cuba, February 8 - February 20, 2000Stage 10 - February 17: Santa Clara-Cárdenas, 180 kmThe big Meriño The Cuban cyclist Joel Meriño won the 10th stage of the Vuelta a Cuba. Meriño, riding for the Cuban B team finished in front of race leader, and compatriot Pedro Pablo Pérez in a bunch sprint. The longest stage of the Vuelta, at 180km was run between Santa Clara and Cárdenas, around the western part of the island, at an average of nearly 42 km/h. The first intermediate sprint was won by Mexican Carlos Hernandez in Santo Domingo (kilometer 37), who finished in third position on the other two at Columbus (112 km) and Jovellanos (144 km). He now leads this classification with 33 points. Tomorrow, there will be two stages - firstly a time trial (40 km) between Cárdenas and Matanzas, followed by a 150 km stage between Matanzas and Guanajay.
