The parcours for the end of the race is similar to the World Championships course of 1992 (won by Bugno) with the climb Alto de Finestrat 10 kilometers from the finish. Most of the major teams will be present, and the start list includes the likes of Jalabert, Olano, Vandenbroucke, Freire, Museeuw, Tonkov, Escartin, Zabel, Konyshev, Tchmil, Gotti, the Zberg connection, Zülle, Hincapie and McEwen. Zabel gains the PuigThe German cyclist Erik Zabel (Telekom) has won the 20th Trofeo Luis Puig. The finish was decided in a bunch sprint, with World Champion Oscar Freire showing again that he can mix it with the best, coming second. In third place was Italian Biago Conte (Saeco). Belgian Nico Mattan (Cofidis) attacked on the climb with 10 km to go by himself, but was chased down in the end by the sprinters teams in the closing kilometer, with Johan Museeuw being prominent for the Mapei squad. However, Erik Zabel had his lead out men of Gianmatteo Fagnini and Giovanni Lombardi to do the job, and he managed to hold off Freire in a very long sprint. It was Zabel's second victory in the event, breaking Mario Cipollini's double of wins in 1998-99. Zabel previously won in 1997, and it marks his third victory for the year. The other incident of note in the race were two rock slides, causing havoc among the peloton. In one of them, over 30 riders were hurt, including Rafael Casero (Festina), brother and team mate of Angel Luis. He was taken to hospital with severe cuts and bruising of his legs.
