Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne - Cat. 1.2Belgium, February 27, 20001999 results Results Past Winners Tchmil wins followupThe Belgian Lotto-Adecco rider, Andrei Tchmil has won the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne race race, making it a Belgian double for the weekend after Johan Museeuw's powerful win in yesterday's Het Volk. Andrei Tchmil formed part of a group of fifteen riders who escaped in the final 10 kilometers. The Cofidis team, represented in this group by four runners (Frank Vandenbroucke, Chris Peers, Jo Planckaert and Peter Farazijn) seemed to have the race in hand, but they did not count on the boldness of Tchmil. With just 1.2 kilometers to go, he attacked the group, managing to stay away by himself until the finish. This is the second time that he has won the race, after he did so two years ago. In second place was another Belgian, Geert van Bondt, who came in alone behind Tchmil, and the Estonian Jan Kirsipuu (Ag2R) won the sprint for third. Last year's winner, Jo Planckaert from Cofidis came in fifth, behind Romans Vainsteins (Lat) of Vini Caldirola. A solid start from the Belgians in their first weekend of racing. However, there was bad news for Australian Scott Sunderland (Palmans) who was involved in a crash with 80 kilometers to go. He ran into the back of Nico Mattan (Cofidis) after riders in front had slammed on the brakes at 65 km/h. Sunderland was taken to hospital in Ronse, where he had 20 stitches in his right knee, and suffered many cuts and bruises. He is taking painkillers and antibiotics and will have to rest for at least a week before considering training again.
