Trans Tasman Challenge Track Cycling Series

Wanganui, New Zealand, February 3-4, 2000

Courtesy of Bryan Simmonds

Wanganui triple national champion Anthony Peden claimed his second former world champion scalp in as many nights when he scored a dramatic sprint victory over Darryn Hill on the second and final night of the Trans-Tasman Challenge track cycling series at Cooks Gardens tonight.

Peden, ranked No 2 in the world in the motor paced keirin, beat 1993 world and 1990-94 Commonwealth Games sprint titleholder Gary Neiwand on the first night of the Grand Hotel sponsored meeting in a final that went to three ride

Tonight Peden added the scalp of 1995 world, 1996 Olympic and 1998 Commonwealth Games sprint champion Darryn Hill to his credit with the judges needed to separate the two riders as they flashed over the line together.

For a second successive night Peden took the opening sprint, lost the second and was forced to ride wide to beat a former Australian team-mate.

The Australians gained revenge in the 500m scratch sprint final with Neiwand holding off team-mates Hill and Danny Day after sweeping past the Kiwis on the last lap.

The fate of the six-race series hung on the last race of the night, the keirin, with Hill finishing strongly to beat Neiwand and Aucklander Gavin Lee to give Australia a 4-2 overall victory.

Carnegie-Caulfield Criterium

Mulgrave, Australia, February 6, 2000

Courtesy of Mark Chadwick

A good field of 164 assembled at Glenvale Crescent in Mulgrave for the regular Sunday crit’s. Most of the trackies were absent, the Warragul/Leongatha weekend carnival offering greater delights, leaving the hard core roadies to fight it out.

A grade started with 49 riders, one of the largest fields so far this season. An attack in the first lap by VIS teammates BJ McIntosh and Brad Davidson escaped, quickly joined by Sth. Africa’s U23 champ Jeremy Martens and James Taylor the lead group swelled to seven before riders began falling by the wayside. One by one the lead group thinned until three remained including McIntosh and Martens. A chase group formed behind including Matt Tuck, Simon Gerrans (VIS), James Taylor and the Giramondo teammates of Martens Graeme Carlson and American Michael "Seppo" Yarski.

The leading trio took a lap by the 40 minute mark and sat among the wheels with the chasing group 35 seconds adrift. As B grade were also using the course at the same time, the Commissaire decided the combination of lapped riders and a joint field of 110 was less than safe and the lapped A graders were retired with ten minutes remaining, much to their distress. The later fall in B grade could have resulted in disaster and the decision was seen to be wise.

With the loss of the shelter of the bunch the leading trio’s advantage started to wane. The group behind pressed on, working even, hard turns. At three to go the gap was gone and the sprint was looming. The Giramondo boys had the advantage with three in the group, Graeme Carlson being the better sprinter took shelter and waited. As the bell rang "Seppo" Yarski blew off the front and held a solid gap for the last lap to record a solid win. Known as "Seppo" from a contraction of the rhyming slang - Septic Tank = Yank, Yarski who is a Ph.D. biochemist took the victory in his stride saying on the recovery ride afterwards that "I don’t take it too seriously, it’s a bit of fun"! Training only 400-500 km/wk he shows that genetics are a great advantage! VIS stand out Simon Gerrans took second place ahead of James Taylor and Graeme Carlson who had blocked for "Seppo" during the final lap. A good result for the Giramondo boys.

B grade had a hard race with repeated attacks lining the 58 riders out the length of the shorter straights. The group managing to keep pace with the storming A grade bunch for a few laps on the occasions that they were passed. Strong groups broke off the front, only to be reabsorbed within a few laps as there were further counter attacks when the capture was effected. The final lap was a hectic affair with the dreaded second corner fall resulting from risks being taken to make position and someone overcooked it. Six down but nothing serious, then disaster as Sophie Freshwater of the Giramondo team was struck from behind by a rider chasing head-down. Taking the brunt of the blow in the lower back Sophie then fell heavily on both knees. The damage to the right knee was significant and strong pain in the low back saw Sophie off to hospital in the back of an ambulance. The sprint to the line was won convincingly by D Bate, the minor placings fought out shoulder to shoulder and Glenn Harvey had a small margin over Chris "Snake" Salisbury and Thomas Campagna who returns to Europe this week.

That most rare of occurrences in C grade - an unclaimed place! With 37 at the start the C graders rode the 45 minutes flat out, flying past D grade with alarming frequency. The all out sprint saw J Vincent cross first, M Dowling second and R England claiming fourth with third totally missed.

D grade’s 20 starters again enjoyed a ten minute neutral allowing the five first timers in the group to receive a bit of advice and settle in. Once released the pace lifted and a good attacking race ensued. About twelve riders came to the bell together, and A Camino bolted, succeeding in winning by perhaps a length from M Keith, K Murphy and J Agostini.
