The 137 lap race was contested by a classy field of 27 starters intent on winning the $1000 prizemoney on offer. Coming two days before the Warragul/Leongatha weekend carnival and the famous Austral Wheelrace one week later, all riders were in top form and put on a great show for the crowd of spectators. Cooke took off with 25 to go and gained a half lap lead which he held alone until at 8 laps to go, former World Pro Sprint Champion Stephen Pate attacked the bunch, escaped and caught Cooke after a 4 lap pursuit. As the duo crossed the line with two laps to go, Pate was heard to say "come on, let's go", and within the next lap Pate and Cooke closed the gap on the bunch. They took a lap to seal the race as well as collecting the $60 prime offered for the first lap taken. The 50 km race was completed in a scorching 1:05 in humid conditions after an earlier thunderstorm which saw the temperature drop from 38C to 24C in 15 minutes.
