Another Dam Race, Stage 1

Arizona, USA, February 25, 2000

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

After two warmup events, won by 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist's Steve Speaks and Kent Bostick of Shaklee, the three-day Another Dam Race began in earnest today in Parker, Arizona. Best known for its tourism industry (Parker boasts one of the most beautiful lake regions in the American Southwest), this remote town has also become renowned as one of the nations best early-season races. With only the U.S. Postal Service team absent, the cream of Americas domestic pro's showed up to make this edition of Another Dam Race the most star-studded in the event's history.

Today's stage was the Kingman Hill Climb, an 11 mile, 3,000 foot mass-start ascent that finished with a 13% grade sting over the last mile. It was not an event designed for finesse or strategy, just brute strength and climbing ability, and it showed in the results. Dominating the proceedings was the Mercury team, fresh off their victory in the Tour of Langkawi; Swiss neo-pro won, with teammates Floyd Landis (2nd), Scott Moninger (4th), and Chris Horner (6th) all in the top ten. The only non-Mercury riders to finish within a minute of Zampieri were Kiwi Brendan Vesty (Navigators) and David Zabriskie (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist). Tomorrow's stage is the Parker Criterium, held in La Paz County Park.

Canberra - Cooma, Stage 1

Canberra, Australia, February 26, 2000

A fine day greeted the 7 grades contesting the inaugural Canberra to Cooma. Starting at the Tuggeranong Vikings Sports Club, groups were sent away in 10 minute intervals for the 110 km race to Cooma. An unusual tail, cross wind from Canberra made for pleasant conditions, although the temperature was nearing the 30 degree point near the end of the event.

In the Women's A Grade field, defending Tour de Snowy champion, and adopted Cooma local, Tracey Gaudry started her first race with her new Timex team from the USA, and displayed outstanding class in taking out the event.

A group of 4 riders escaped about 40 kms into the race, including AIS rider Sara Carrigan, Timex rider Odessa Gunn, Naomi Williams (TIS) and a Dutch national team rider.

Gaudry bridged the 2 min. gap solo at about the 55 km point, and kept the pace hard, with the gap back to the main group extending to over 5 mins. Williams was finding the going tough on the undulating course, and at 10 km to go, Gaudry and Carrigan had left the remaining 3 riders behind, with the main group still a further 7-8 mins. back.

Just before the turn-off from the main highway at 6 km to go, Gaudry attacked and opened up a 500 metre gap, that Carrigan could not close by the finish. A great performance by Carrigan in her 2nd year of senior competition. Timex rider Gunn outsprinted the Dutch rider for 3rd, with Williams closing back to about 100 metres at the finish for 5th.

Leading the main group home was Margaret Hemsley (NSWIS) for 6th place, in a group sprint of approximately 230 riders, at 8 mins. in arrears. The Timex team, only having arrived from the USA on a delayed flight 2 days ago, filled 3 of the top 10 placings, and rode aggressively from the first small climb after the flag dropped.

In the Men's A Grade, Nick Brown (NSWIS) finished alone for the win, with Denis Mungovern the local favourite taking 4th. B grade Women was taken out by junior rider Fiona Dwyer (NSWIS).
