Results and Reports for February 22McLane Pacific Bicycle Classic #2Merced, USA, February 20, 2000 By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent Elite Men The two-day McLane Pacific Bicycle Classic concluded on Sunday, February 20th, with the 120-mile Foothills Road Race. Thirteen of the 122 riders who had competed in the previous day's criterium opted to skip the road race, and it was soon apparent why, as the combination of rolling hills and nasty crosswinds turned the event into a race of attrition. After just 20 miles, the 30 mph gusts had forced the peloton to form echelons, the first two of which consisted mostly of members of the Mercury, Navigators, and Saturn team, plus a handful of others - 25 riders in all. At about the 55-mile mark, Michael Sayers (Mercury), Antonio Cruz (Saturn), and Victor Repinski, a former junior world track champion from Russia, went clear in a move that looked doomed to failure, both because of the winds and the fact that no members of the Navigators squad were present in the move. But Navigators didn't begin the chase immediately, preferring to regroup after a pair of crashes and several mechanicals had left a number of their riders to chase back up to the lead group. That delay would prove to be fatal, as, by the time the Navigators squad began the pursuit at the 80-mile mark, the three leaders had gained five minutes. After a long and fruitless chase, the Navigators resigned themselves to taking the group sprint for fourth, which Vassili Davidenko did quite handily. As for the three leaders, they worked together well, with the unknown Repinski proving to be a real powerhouse, up until the final two miles, when the cat-and-mouse games began. The trio stayed together until Repinski jumped and Sayers countered with 150 meters to go, with the Mercury rider nipping Repinski at the line. The final sprint was decided as Heather Albert beat out Erlank at the finish, who had attacked with 1 kilometer to go. Saturn's Nicole Reinhart won the field sprint that followed.
