Stage 8 - February 27: Santiago - Santo Domingo, 152 km

Venezuelan victory

Guatemalan Gustavo Carillo, riding for a US based Dominican team (ASODOCI), has won the final stage of the 21st Vuelta Independencia Nacional. He covered the 152 km distance from Santiago City to John F. Kennedy Avenue in Santo Domingo in 3:18:56, beating Julio Bernal (Alico) and Berd Niumann (Honduras) in a four-up sprint. In fourth place was American Steven Mluyeak (Miami).

However, the overall honours for the tour went to Venezuealan, Alexis Méndez, who beat José Ibáñez of Bolivia by 1:08, with Julio Rangel (Col, Aro y Pedal) in third place. Méndez led the race after stage five, and finalised his position with a win in the 13km time trial yesterday afternoon.

The intermediate sprints classification was won by Chris Frederick (Miami), while Dominican Wendy Cruz won the points. In the mountains classification, race winner Méndez was also the best. The team prize was won by Venezuela, with the club of Mauricio Báez coming in second in front of Monte Carlo.
