Glenvale Crescent, Mulgrave, Vic, December 17, 2000

Two hundred riders met at Glenvale Crescent, Mulgrave to participate in the best bicycle racing available on a weekly basis in Victoria. The field swelled with interstate and overseas visitors tuning up for the Bay Criterium Series that starts 3 Jan in Williamstown.

A grade again had an early break, again established by SBR-De Rosa/Bolle's Kristjan Snorrason. 62 hardened bike racers with MTB World Cup wins, major road and track qualifications saw the early move go up the road with Snorrason quickly joined by Queenslander Ben Day (Group Sportif/Ti Sports), Look's Hilton Clarke jnr, and Brendan Gilholme (Gran Prix Cycles). Many attempts at bridging resulted in the fragmentation of the big bunch into ineffective smaller groups. In the end it was Day who rode off the front, looking to be doing it easy, to take a solo win from Brendan Gilholme who had left the rest of the break in the dying laps of the race. The sprint for third came down to millimetres as Snorrason held Clarke in the final metres.

Mikkeli Godfrey will be joining his SBR cohorts in A grade after taking the sprint in the 77 rider B grade race. Describing the race afterwards as "slow and choppy" he was surprised by the high average (42kph) after checking his cycle-computer. The race was marred by the fall of 38yo ex-Sportscover pro Guy Green who was taken by ambulance to Box Hill Hospital with injuries to his left hip. Surges saw the big bunch strung out frequently, with position at a premium. In the end-play the front of the race seemed to contain a great many sprinters with too few lead-out men. Mikkeli Godfrey came off the wheel of eventual fourth placed Chris Salisbury having decided, rightly, that the veteran trackie would make good position. Splitting these two, were Gavin White and Sydney Olympian Anna Milward (Saturn).

C grade's 35 riders seemed to spend the whole race in one long line until late in the race breaks started to go. Ben Cleveland rode away in the end to claim victory from Robert Doyle, Daniel Melmo and Chris Donlan.

In D grade, Harry Monier took twenty seconds from the bunch and proceeded to maintain the gap to solo into C grade for his next ride. Heath Jackson placed second after a valiant chase. James Towers and Peter Calveros filled the minor placings.

E grade again took advantage of Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingworth's advice and encouragement before sprinting it out. Peter Johnston won ahead of Mike Philips, Amy Philips and Alex Cummings.

Burleigh, QLD, December 17, 2000

Perfect racing weather - blue skies, 25 degrees Celsius and no wind - greeted the 94 starters at Burleigh this weekend. The A Graders were content to ride as a bunch for much of the race, with virtually the whole field contesting the sprint. Last week's breakaway duo of Robbie McEwen and German Thorsten Wilhelms were once again to the fore, with Wilhelms edging out McEwen, from Australian Under 19 representative Jon Cantwell in third.

Triathlete Zane Thorpe outsprinted his breakaway companions to win B Grade, vet Werner Rogosenski made it two in a row in C Grade, while Arch Davis just got over last week's winner Stan James in D Grade.
