Brown, Hopkins, Benson were there... the winner? Adrian Estreich!

One of the biggest upsets this year came on Sunday afternoon at the 2000 Criterium Championships. With a strong field of over 50 riders such as Former World Champions Graeme Brown, Jeff Hopkins plus with some top open A grade riders such as Darrel Benson and Brett Waygood, Unknown B Grade Penrith Panthers rider Adrian Estreich showed everyone you don’t have to be number one to win just have the determination and the will to win.

Carnegie-Caulfield Cycling Club criterium

Waverley Park, Mulgrave, Vic, December 12, 2000

Cool, breezy conditions met the 122 riders who assembled at Waverley Park football stadium to race over the 2,000 metre car park circuit. The VIS camp at MacAllister Lodge in Glenmaggie thinned out the numbers in A grade, but the racing was fierce without 'em.

Ray Turner (Repco) made an unusual double, winning B grade last Tuesday then A grade this week. A product of the Bendigo system, Turner surprised the field as they reeled in the late breakaway duo of Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) and Ryan Kelly (Terry Hammond Cycles). He said afterwards that he had no confidence at all in his sprint but thought the chance was "worth taking". Struggling with a half lap to go — he was "digging holes" — Turner held on to take the win from James Taylor (Ashburton Cycles), Paul Anders and Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion).

B grade's 49 riders chased many attempted escapes all of which came to naught, the bunch appeared distressed to find wily Bruce Will away at the bell making a gallant lone effort. A huge effort from Simon Walker set up the win for his friend Rohan McLellan who had Anna Milward at a half bike disadvantage on the line. Hugh Watson took third with Mikkeli Godfrey fourth.

A successful two-man escape in C grade as Peter Oziemski and Gerard O'Brien teamed-up to take a 250 metre lead from what remained of the 29 riders after the chasing started. With the lead duo sitting up at the finish, the interest was in the sprint for third as Lincoln Belcourt threw at the line to relegate Craig Hawke into fourth.

Two away in D grade as well, this time father and son duo John and Chris Tassel. The Tassel's earned there way into C grade for their next start taking over a minute from their bunch in the course of their 30-minute adventure. Young Chris led Dad in with Loretta Mabin third from the promising newcomer Cheryl Hickman.

The three E grade kids followed D grade for a while, gaining experience among the wheels before fighting it out among themselves. Mitch Peart winning ahead of Peter Johnstone and Dale Reith.

Eastern Suburbs CC Criterium

Heffron Park, Sydney, NSW, December 12, 2000

The hottest day this summer with the temperature still hovering around 38 degrees celsius at 6pm greeted the 80 riders who lined up for the last handicap before Christmas. Next week is the annual Trophy Race (A&B combined) before the Summer Poinstcore Series starts on 2 January 2001.

After not 'getting up' last week, A grade were always going to be on a mission tonight and with Stuart Dangerfield from England racing for the first time since his top 20 finish in the World ITT and driving the scratch bunch, B grade were lined up with 5 laps to go.

Instead of the A grade train then winding up for a high speed finish, 4 B grade escapees had stolen a small break which was the perfect opportunity for Stuart Dangerfield, riding in his Eastern Suburbs colours, to attack the A grade bunch, catch the B grade escapees, ride through C grade on the last lap and win by a margin of half the length of the finishing straight. It's going to be a long hot summer!
