Cruz takes the first leader's jersey

Dominican Republic rider, Wendy Cruz (Adidas) has become the first leader of the 36th Vuelta a Costa Rica, after he won the opening 1 kilometre time trial on the Velódromo Nacional in La Paz. Cruz clocked 1.09.26 for the three laps of the velodrome, beating Costa Ricans, Robert Núñez (Té Frío con Limón Dos Pinos) and Carlos Salazar (Café de Costa Rica-Pizza Hut A) for the honour.

The stage does not count for the overall, but Cruz recognises that he is unlikely to win and took the opportunity today. However, he said afterwards that he will defend his jersey for as long as possible, and try to win the sprint stages.
