Stage 2 - December 18: Circuito Limón-Puerto Viejo, 133 km

Mexican triumph again

Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Costa Rica ended in another Mexican victory, as Miguel Meza won the 133 kilometre circuit race from Colombian Víctor Herrera (Dis Kendal Accesorios) and Manuel Hernández (México). In the overall classification, Róbert Núñez held onto his amarillo leader's jersey from Víctor Herrera.

The stage was conducted in Limón with 12 laps of the city, before it headed to Puerto Viejo for the finish. At first, the race was animated by Wendy Cruz and Nieves Carracso (Adidas Pipasa INS Jaisa A & B) who attacked. However, with the race leader in the bunch, as well as the Mexican team and various Pizza Hut riders, the break was doomed. Núñez' Té Frío Dos Pinos team worked quite hard to keep things in check, as did Café de Costa Rica.

In the end it was the Mexican Miguel Meza who triumphed, but he made no impression on the overall, being 40 minutes down on the leader already. Victor Herrera on the other hand, benefitted from his second placing to move into second overall.

Tomorrow is a 137 kilometre stage between Cahuita and Guápiles, another generally flat stage.
