Gully, Grande Steal the
Show at SuperCup Finals
As promised, the SuperCup finals turned out to be the show of shows.
The elite men's title, after a four-race duel between Marc Gullickson
(Mongoose) and Tim Johnson (Saturn), boiled down to the final few meters
of the final lap of the final race. "He deserved to win. He was definitely
the strongest guy today," said Johnson, one day after he turned the
tables on Gullickson to win the National Championships, one spot ahead
of Gully, the 1999 champ.
"Last year I was so bummed. I won the nationals, but I really wanted
to win the SuperCup," said Gullickson, who lost the SuperCup series
to Saturn's Bart Bowen on the final lap of the final race of the 1999
series.
And for a moment, the situation appeared dire for Gullickson again.
After a WWF-style roll call to the line, complete with a smoking tent
and chariot ride to the line for Dale Knapp (Kona/Voicestream), Gullickson
and Johnson fired off the line and set a red-hot pace on the icy cold
course. The day before racers competed in minus-40 wind chill on a surface
glazed with ice. For SuperCup finals they raced in cold weather, but
bright sunshine and no wind made for a comfortable, carnival-like venue.
The crowds, although small by SuperCup comparison, were raucous and
loud.
And the noise level went up as Johnson and Gully deposited all their
competitors "like a rusty muffler" said race announcer Chris Zigmont.
Only one rider stuck to the wheels of Johnson and Gully.
"What did I see? I looked back and I saw blue," said Johnson, noting
the colors of Knapp's jersey. Dubbed 'The Rocky Balboa of Cyclocross,'
Knapp came prepared to Kansas City. He scored a fourth place in the
nationals and rode savagely with the leaders. A later surge by Gullickson
would drop Knapp, but left him in secure ownership of third place.
Then Gullickson crashed.
"All of a sudden Gully was on his ass in the snow and I just attacked,"
said Johnson who ripped open a 15-second gap on the series leader. "It
was really weird. You would hit one turn that had a southern exposure
and it would be all mud and the next turn the other way would be all
ice and frozen," said Gullickson.
If Johnson, racing with just 26 pounds of pressure in his tires, could
hold the lead to the end, he would become the first racer to score the
elusive SuperCup-nationals double.
But it would not be. After a three-lap chase scene, Gullickson reeled
himself back up to Johnson with three laps to go. "I knew I was in trouble
when he started to stand up out of all the turns," said Johnson. "You
could tell he was still feeling strong."
As the duo rumbled to the home stretch, the race for the remaining
podium spots heated up. Knapp secured third place, but behind him unfolded
wheel-to-wheel combat for fourth. Saturn's Kingpin of Cross, Mark McCormack,
who won the Gloucester SuperCup, struggled to catch Knapp for several
laps. He then found challenges from behind. First came Steve Tilford
(Jogmate), the king of Kansas cycling, who passed him to the approval
of hometown fans. McCormack fought back. Next came an assault from Alex
Candelario (Boulder/Denver Courier), competing with two fingers blackened
by frostbite on Saturday. McCormack fought back. And then came Jonathon
Page (Richard Sachs), who then surged past his one-time mentor McCormack.
And it stuck. Page rolled in for fourth; McCormack for fifth. Meanwhile,
1999 SuperCup champion, Bart Bowen roared up through the ranks on the
final lap to catch Tilford. The Topeka racer edged out Bowen for sixth.
At the front, Gullickson and Johnson went bar-to-bar in the sprint,
making repeated contact. Gullickson used his power to come around the
outside on the sweeping turn to the finish. Johnson's position helped,
but not enough.
"I knew I had enough power," said Gullickson, who hit the line to
the roar of the crowd, happy to see each man come away from the weekend
with laurels commensurate to their heroics.
Grande wins fourth straight
SuperCup
Ann Grande (Kona/Voicestream) started the day tied with Carmen Richardson
(SoBe/Headshok) on points for the lead, with Rachel Lloyd (Sycip/Novo)
in striking distance for the title. Unfortunately for all three ladies,
they had to contend with Alison Dunlap (GT), who had just won her fourth
straight national title.
Dunlap rocketed away on the first lap with Grande in close pursuit.
While Dunlap rode with precision, Grande struggled on the icy conditions.
Dunlap rode to victory with a slender 12-second advantage over Grande.
Grande's spirited pursuit of Dunlap gave her the second spot and the
series title, her fourth SuperCup title in as many years. She was followed
by Lloyd and Richardson in that order. This gave the second place spot
overall to Richardson, who finished second last year. The third place
for Lloyd proved redemptive for her entire career. Her victory in Boulder
and second place in Chicago had moved her into the elite. And third
overall delivered a powerful point on her resume.
Obye gets revenge
Alan Obye (Grimace) roared away from all contenders to win his third
SuperCup and the overall title, with little threat. (Only in Gloucester,
where his handlebars snapped, did he fail to win.) He had expected to
win the nationals, too, but the icy conditions victimized him like so
many others. Racing with too much air pressure, the Vermont racer crashed
repeatedly during the nationals, in which he placed second to Josh Anthony
(ECV). The SuperCup gave him a solid signature to the end of his season-long
contract with himself.
Farrell holds on to win
Masters
Dennis Farrell (Red Rocks Velo) opened the SuperCup with a dominant
Boulder victory in the masters division. He then had to ride in defense
of the jersey. In Gloucester, Scott Wade (Gear Works) roared away to
win, with Farrell finishing a sobering sixth place. In Chicago, he fought
to hold the lead as Ken Smith of Texas took the race. And in Kansas,
Farrell struggled on the ice falling far behind Steve Dudley (Bicycle
Link) and Chris D'Aluisio (SoBe/Headshok), who dueled for the lead.
Farrell dropped so far into the field that his overall lead came under
threat. On the final lap, Farrell charged at the course with James Bond
abandon. The risk paid off, he finished an impressive third, and fastened
down the series victory.
