Stage 16 - September 12: Oviedo-El Angliru, 168 km
This is it - the stage that put paid to many of the favourite's chances last year after an epic battle in the mountains and apalling conditions. The 168 kilometre stage does not really get hard until the halfway point, when the climbing begins in earnest. The category 1 Alto de la Colladiella (km 119) is 6.5 kilometres with a maximum grade of 11.7%. Following this is the Alto de el Cordial (km 147), a 5.5 kilometre climb averaging nearly 10% with the steepest part at the top.
The final climb, Alto de l'Angliru is fearsome: beginning at La Vega at 300 metres, there follows 11 kilometres of climbing up to 1573 metres (an average of 11.5 %). It has a maximum of 17.2 % in the final kilometres and will certainly crack many a rider as it did in 1999.
