I'm back in Australia at last and competing in the Tour of Sunraysia
in Mildura, a 3 day tour with 6 stages. I am the only female competing
and so I am finding the tour pretty tough. But luckily for me the usual
gale force winds that the tour is renowned for aren't here so it isn't
quite as difficult as it has been in the past - so I am told!
The tour began with a 33km criterium. There are 6 track riders here
from New Zealand - using the tour as their preparation for the Olympic
Games. They started the tour in force, repeatedly attacking the field.
There were sprints every second lap which were worth 3, 2 and 1 seconds
to the first three riders across the line and New Zealander Greg Henderson
soon established a good lead in that competition. We weren't much over
halfway through the criterium when Greg Henderson broke away from the
field to try for a solo win. Jeremy Maartens from South Africa was able
to get across and join Greg for a while but with 3 laps to go Greg turned
on the turbo and was solo again.
The bunch was closing in rapidly in the last couple of laps - and
I was at full throttle just trying to stay in the bunch. But Greg had
enough left to hold everyone off for the win. He received a 10 second
time bonus for winning and combined with the other time bonuses he won
during the race he held a good overall lead in the race. Troy Clarke
took out the bunch sprint for second place, followed by Ashley Hutchinson.
I finished in the bunch so received the same time as about 100 other
people.
