De Jongh wins 75th Schaal Sels

Steven de Jongh of the Rabobank team won the 75th edition of the Schaal Sels kermesse race in Merksem. De Jongh outsprinted Manheim/Mercury's Henk Vogels in a tight finish, with British rider Roger Hammond (Collstrop) taking third.

The main move of the day came from Geert Omloop (Spar-OKI), Vladimir Miholievic (KRKA) and Michael Van Der Wolf (Cologne) who established a 6 minute lead after attacking on lap three. However, with four laps to go the peloton had caught them and it came down to a bunch sprint, won by Dutch rider, De Jongh. There was only 3 mm in it though, and the organiser first gave the flowers to Vogels (who had been involved in a late, unsuccessful attack before winding up again for the bunch sprint).

Steven de Jongh couldn't believe what he saw and asked for the photo finish. It was clear: De Jongh was the winner. He went to the jury, looking for Vogels and while Vogels was interviewed about his 'victory', De Jongh asked him for the flowers. It was the end of the Vogels' interview and De Jongh took over "This is my third victory of this season after Veenendaal and Buggenhout. Last week in the Ronde van Nederland there were four bunch sprints, but then I had to work for Erik Dekker. This victory gives me 40 UCI points and it's almost a home victory. I live near in Essen (Bel)."
