Palacio sends a Cable

By Haroldo Camacho

Héctor Iván Palacio, winner of this year's Vuelta a Colombia, sprinted away from a breakaway of ten in the last meters to raise his hands in victory reminiscent of his recent triumph in the Vuelta a Colombia. Julio César Aguirre remains in the tri-colored leader's jersey. Both men are from Orbitel 5, whose technical director Raúl Mesa stated after the race that his philosophy in racing is akin to that of "the cannibal" Eddy Merckx: don't leave anyone any spoils.

Various riders attempted breakaways which proved unfruitful due to Orbitel 5's dominance in controlling the tempo of the race. Palacio's time for the 210 mountainous miles was 5:40:19. Five seconds behind followed ten riders led by Alvaro Lozano who outsprinted overall race leader Aguirre at the line.

Aguirre remains in the tri-colored jersey, and once again Orbitel 5 sends a message this time by Héctor Palacio's sprint at the steep finish line in "The Cable", Manizales.
