Stage 1 - August 23: Farnham - Farnham, 97 km

Ulmer versus Bessette again

New Zealand's main hope for the 3000m individual pursuit and points race, Sarah Ulmer (Elita), continuned her great run of form this year by winning stage one of the GP Femenine International du Quebec. Although she possesses an excellent sprint, Ulmer won the race today in a two woman breakaway although she finished solo at the end. Second was Canada's Lyne Bessette, almost in a repeat of their duel during the Tour de 'Toona last week.

The 97 kilometre road race that started and finished in Farnham was fast from the gun, with an overall average of 40.8 km/h. Elita was looking to set up Ulmer for the win and were one of the most aggressive teams. Sarah Ulmer and Melanie McQuaid (Canada) finally escaped with 15 kilometres to go, and Ulmer dropped McQuaid in the final five kilometres. A late attack from Bessette failed to close the gap and Ulmer finished with a seven second lead.

The next two stages are somewhat hillier, and Ulmer's reign at the head of the classification may be short.
