Stage 1 - August 25: Criterium, 75 min

The H-n-H race is on the National Racing Calender series for the men, and with a big race going on at the same time in New York on the east coast the pro field is split. This race is run in conjuction with a pay/tour ride that attracks over 10,000 riders! This race is famous for the west Texas heat that is common for this time of year in the south. The tempature for the criterium at the 6:30pm start was 107 deg Fahrenheit! I not sure of the Celsius reading for you foreigners [42-ish], but it was HOT.

The field of 80+ riders were very aware of the heat and the early pace of the race was reflected in the slow but steady pace. Many primes were on offer and this kept the field interested, but not many breaks were allowed any room to escape. Team Shaklee and Colorado Cyclist were by far the dominant teams in the race.

With around 15(? I was racing, not exactly sure, JW) laps remaining, three riders escaped and got a 15 sec gap. Eric Wohlberg (Shaklee), Sylvain Beauchamp (Shaklee), and Mark Ernsting (MSU) were off for good with Shaklee controlling the field. With six laps(?) remaining, myself, Jason Waddell (Arlington Velo) and Seth Pelusi (Saturn) set off in pursuit of the three riders who now had a 20 sec advantage. We brought back some time in the closing laps but were unable to close the gap. However, we did hold off the field for 4th and 5th respestively. The field was led in by current National Elite RR Champion Steve Cate.

Stage 2 - August 26: Road Race, 100 mi/160 km

The road race started at 7:00am in the morning and the temperature was already 80 deg F. By the finish, the temperature had already reached 100+ deg F. Team Shaklee had the overall leader in Sylvain Beauchamp and with Eric Wohlberg in 3rd, you could be sure that Shaklee were going to be active.

The road race offered four Hot Spot $100 primes during the route as well as time bonuses. At the first Hot Spot (10miles) a group of five escaped the field. Fisher and Corbett (7UP-CC), Valenzuela and Mauritsen (Shaklee) and myself, Jason Waddell (Arlington Velo). The group stayed at about 30 sec to the field for around 5 miles and then Pelusi (Saturn), Beauchamp and Dirk Friel (Monsoon) bridged up and the race was on for the next 90 miles! The break stayed together until the finish with Mauritsen dropping back and Valenzuela flatting with 8 miles to go. I must report that Pelusi and Friel pulled the final 30 miles by THEMSELVES. The two 7UP and Shaklee riders were not willing to help at all, so these two managed to hold off a chasing group of around 15 riders basically by themselves. I say Bravo to them as I was cramping like mad with 30+ miles left.

The sprint was started by Corbett with 1 km to go followed by Beauchamp and then myself. I launched with 150 meters to go and Fisher got me by half a wheel at the finish. The ITT is tomorrow and it proves to be interesting to see if TT king Wohlberg can make up his 1:48 defecit and if Beauchamp can hold onto the lead. (PS: I can't TT worth a flip! JW)

Stage 3 - August 27: Individual Time Trial, 10 mi/16 km

The ITT was this morning and with the heat the organizers always think it is better to start us at sunrise! Well, the first men's rider went off sometime around 7:30am and the women riders started before us! As predicted Eric Wolberg (Shaklee) simply did what he does best, he wins TT's. That guy is amazing, as I was going downhill on one part of the course he was going uphill on the other side of the road and I would bet he was going just as fast as I was. I wish him the best of luck in Sydney and I hope he does well. It wasn't enough for the overall win however, as that was taken by his Shaklee teammate, Sylvain Beauchamp over 7UP's Chris Fisher.

My teammate Peter Erdoes won the afternoon category 3 criterium and I would like to say good job. As he is 40 this year and riding against much younger riders I consider that quite an accomplishment.
