The World Cup gets back on the road after the Spring Classics with the HEW-Cyclassics Cup in Hamburg, Germany. Cycling in Germany is enormously popular, and this race became part of the World Cup three years ago, in place of the Rund um den Henninger Turm. Although not considered a particularly selective course, the HEW-Cyclassics will nevertheless be watched by hundreds of thousands of German fans.

The two previous winners of this race (as a World Cup) are Leon Van Bon (Rabobank) and Mirko Celestino (Polti), the latter of whom surprised the rest last year to "steal" the race. While the young Italian has not had a good season this year, he'll be back on the start line on Sunday, as will Van Bon. The big one to watch though will be Telekom's Erik Zabel, currently leading the World Cup by a massive 165 points after victories in two of the early season events. Zabel recently won a stage and a record fifth green jersey in the Tour de France, and is now racing on home turf.

After having scaled numerous 2,000 m plus peaks in the Tour, Zabel will find Sunday's maximum altitude of 90 m more suited to his style, and should have no trouble staying with the favourites. If it comes down to a bunch sprint, then he is sure to score more points whether he wins or not. The closing laps contain a steep 16% climb which Telekom will have to be wary of to prevent a surprise breakaway.

The rest of the course is largely flat, following a figure 8 loop for the first 170 kilometres. The Köhlbrand Hochbrücke is the main challenge - more from the wind than the ascent as the peloton passes over the Elbe river. Then the riders enter onto two finishing circuits of 41.4 kilometres, finishing in Mönckebergstrase after 251 kilometres in total.

Other riders to look out for include the in-form Erik Dekker and his Rabobank teammate Markus Zberg. The Dutch riders should certainly be at ease on this parcours. Saeco will not see the return of Mario Cipollini to major competition after his re-entry in the GP Camaiore this week. In that race he pedalled 100 km before calling it quits, and it's doubtful that could have played a big role on Sunday. Their hopes will probably lie with Biagio Conte, a stage winner in the Giro.

Last year's second place getter, Raphael Schweda (Nürnberger) has had a solid but not outstanding season in 2000. He suffered from a bad cold prior to the Tour of Germany and hasn't been 100% since. He has managed to secure a contract with Telekom though for next year and will be looking at doing something in this race.

Mapei and Vini Caldirola will resume their duel after their top riders, Michele Bartoli and Francesco Casagrande placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the GP Camaiore. Mapei have brought a strong team with Museeuw, Bettini, Freire, Scinto, Steels, Tafi and Van Heeswijk to try and win the race.

One rider who would like to beat Zabel is a certain Marcel Wüst (Festina), who is also 33 on Sunday. Wüst will be specially honoured for the occasion, but does not hold out great hopes for the race. He believes that a 10 or so strong group will make it to the finish in the lead, with all the main teams represented. Possibly a bunch sprint, or a solo victory - Wüst will have to have everything fall into place for him to win in Hamburg.
