Hoedemakers in the heat
Today's 1.5 UCI race in the South of The Netherlands (and a part of
Germany) was agony for most of the riders, as the temperature rose to
32 degrees C and only 26 of the 120 starters passed the finish line.
[perfect conditions in my opinion ;-) - Jeff]
In the first lap (14 kilometers, 12 times) it was Marc Chanoine (Bel)
from Team Tönissteiner who did most of the work. Also Corey Sweet (Australia),
Berry Hoedemakers (Ned), Roger Hammond (Eng) and with moderation Rudi
Kemna (Ned) managed a great effort today.
The "tête de la course" was formed by Sweet, Hoedemakers, Hammond
and Kemna. Hammond did most of the job followed by Hoedemakers en Sweet.
The sly Kemna did nothing and speculated on his strongest weapon, the
sprint. With 3'20 to go on the last lap they started looking at each
other, but when Berry Hoedemakers left the group at the Hambosweg, the
others did not follow him. A spectacular pursuit by Marc Chanoine, who
had been ill for several months this year, almost succeeded but in the
last kilometre he could not catch them.
