Racing in preparation for the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium, the penultimate stop on the Saturn USPRO Cycling Tour, the men's team swept all three podium spots after a strong performance. Shortly after the race began, Jansen, McCormack, Dominguez, and Chris Baldwin (Navigators) formed the winning break which eventually lapped the rest of the field. With Jansen attacking in the final few kilometers he coasted across the finish line with the victory as McCormack and Dominguez outsprinted Baldwin. In an aggressive women's race, it was again Saturn on top with sprinter Nicole Reinhart doing what she does best to take the win in front of Charles Schwab's Marie Holjer and Irish Olympian, Deirdre Murphy, with US Criterium champion, Laura van Guilder (Charles Schwab) taking fourth. These four riders formed a break that stay awayed from the field to contest the win. There is only one Saturn USPRO Tour event remaining, the all-important BMC Tour of Boston on September 17th. Reinhart has clinched the overall victory as she now holds an insurmountable lead of 141 points over Tina Mayolo (Autotrader.com), however that $250,000 cash bonus for winning all four BMC events is not hers yet - she needs to take out that last race. Named for a local cyclist killed by a drunk driver, the Thater Memorial featured non-stop action, as the rest of the U.S. pro peloton took advantage of Mercury's virtual absence - just two riders in the race - and showed their stuff on the tough 1.2-mile circuit. After a number of early attacks, the definitive move materialized at about the midway point: John Lieswyn (Shaklee), Mark McCormack (Saturn), Mark Walters (Navigators), Doug Ziewacz (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist), Tim Johnson (Mercury), and Matt Minard went clear, gaining ground rapidly on the rest of the field. While the latter two were soon left behind, the remaining four worked well together, building up a lead of 1:15 before they began jockeying for position in the final laps; at the finish, it was Walters taking the win over McCormack and Lieswyn, with Ziewacz in fourth. That's Team Shaklee's record at the Great Lakes Cycling Classic. The division 3 pro team repeated their winning performance of the previous editions of the GLCC, putting 39 year old Graeme Miller atop the podium this year. With five riders on the line, Shaklee had horsepower to spare. Other contenders - like the 7-Up / Colorado Cyclist team, with criterium ace Kevin Monahan and lieutenants Doug Ziewacz and Ryan Guay, solo riders from Mercury in John Peters and Navigators with Paul Martin, plus regional teams like Ontario's Jet Fuel and Ital Pasta - could only try to follow the moves that Shaklee laid down. In the first five laps of the 0.9 mile loop through the village of East Aurora, Shaklee's New Zealanders Graeme Miller and Glen Mitchell shot off the front of the pack, with 7-Up's Monahan leading a chase group behind. After Monahan took a huge pull, Shaklee strongman John Lieswyn threw salt in the wound and jumped away from the chasers, bridging solo to his two teammates ahead. The three Shaklees then went to work on lapping the field, and connected to the back of the pack with 12 laps to go. Meanwhile, Monahan continued driving a four rider chase, but his hard-working group could gain no more than a minute on the field. In the end, the Shaklee posse let Miller take the win, joining the ranks of Liewsyn ('99) and Eric Wolhberg ('98, '97) on the Great Lakes Cycling Classic trophy. Behind, Monahan took the sprint for fourth from Gustavo Carillo of Higher Gear / Cityscape, while Shaklee's David McCook calimed the field sprint for eighth, contributing to the over $3000 his team drew out of the $6750 purse. In the category 3-4 Masters race, 35 year old Chris Bushover schooled his young competitors on how to win a bike race. As the pack mushroomed with one lap to go, the Buffalo rider pulled the trigger and opened a sizable gap - which he held to the line. ResultsMen Pro 1-2, 35 mi/56.4 km 1.
