The 94 starters were lacking in the upper grades as the Tour of Sunraysia was underway in the state's north. A grade started alongside B grade and the two groups raced together until Ryan Kelly (Terry Hammond Cycles) initiated an attack that took a small(er) group away. Eventual winner Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) worked even turns with Kelly, Michael Yarski (Giramondo) and Tom Jepson (Trak). 17 year old Kelly tired as the clock wound down and was unable to stay with the others as they gained a 45 second lead to finish in sight of the tail of the remaining A&B bunch. In B grade Alan Schnable took the honors in a tight bunch finish. The race had seen many attempts at escape, all of which came to naught. At three to go the sprinters who had lurked in the rear of the bunch moved forward as one and the top ten placings covered a bare metre. Second to Russell Newnham from Darren Cathie and Dean Smith. A successful escape in C grade as the eventual minor placegetters rode off the front mid-race. Shane Perkins, now holder of multiple State U15 titles, bridged the gap soon after and skipped away in the last lap to record a resounding win. D grade's race was relatively sedate, as befits the nursery of newcomers and the home of the "pension queue". The final saw veterans 1,2,3 with youngster Tyrin Simpson fourth. Mick Donlan, a young 55, held off the storming seventy+ duo of David Hill and Bruce Cochrane. Next week sees the club racing at Modella on the hills and 5 Sept is the first Tuesday night at Waverley Park for the season.
